Godzilla Makes Major Change to One Villain’s Origin Story

For quite some time now, Godzilla has dominated various aspects of entertainment. Known as the King of Monsters, he’s set to make a comeback on cinema screens in both Japan and North America. In the East, it’s with the sequel to Godzilla Minus One, while in the West, we’ll see him battle Kong in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. The kaiju genre is brimming with tales for the future, but the comics are venturing into uncharted territories. Godzilla has been clashing with Marvel’s top heroes of late, and IDW Publishing has decided to rewrite the origins of a popular Godzilla adversary entirely.

In the latest issue 2 of the comic book series titled “Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens”, the malevolent character Hedorah reappears. Originally introduced in the 1971 film “Godzilla Vs. Hedorah”, this ominous smog monster not only engaged in battle with Godzilla, but also showed a readiness to wipe out countless humans as it rampaged through. In this current IDW comic series, we delve deeper into the monster’s past, revealing that it arrived on Earth far before our modern era. Interestingly enough, Hedorah wasn’t the only one who landed on Earth long ago; his entire species did as well and is said to have served as the inspiration for H.G. Wells’ “War of The Worlds”. Fortunately, issue 2 provides a detailed account of Hedorah’s origins.

Hedorah Vs. The Xiliens

As the Xilien threat resurfaces on Earth, the U.S. government faces a dilemma about their response. Fortunately, they can draw upon history for guidance, recalling past battles like the one against Hedorah and its kind. A medical professional traces the story of the Xiliens’ first arrival on Earth in the late 19th century, which seems to have influenced H.G. Wells’ work.

In the past, similar events have occurred; they are often referred to as ‘The War of The Worlds’. This happened in Surrey, England in 1897, a Xilien invasion that mirrors our current situation. It was this event that sparked H.G. Wells’ imagination and led him to write his renowned novel, but he left out some important details. One such detail is the presence of Hedorah, who is more commonly known as Grendel in history. Grendorah is a malfunctioning Xilien probe that has traditionally allied with humans and revolted against its alien makers.

In this latest IDW comic book, Hedorah takes center stage, whereas Legendary’s MonsterVerse is yet to feature Hedorah in a fight against Godzilla, Kong, or any of its colossal beasts. Fingers crossed for 2027’s Supernova, as fans of kaiju eagerly anticipate the introduction of Hedorah into the successful cinematic universe, offering a fresh perspective on one of Godzilla’s most fearsome adversaries.
