Godzilla Minus One Sequel Will Be Releasing Earlier Than Expected (And Be Much Darker)

A new sequel to Godzilla Minus One is on the way, and it’s arriving in theaters worldwide sooner than anticipated. Godzilla Minus One was initially released to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the iconic TOHO franchise and to usher the kaiju series into a new era. The film proved to be a massive success with both audiences and critics, becoming the highest-grossing Godzilla film in TOHO’s history. It also marked a historic moment for the company, earning TOHO its first Academy Award, along with numerous other prestigious accolades.

It wasn’t unexpected that TOHO is already planning a sequel to Godzilla Minus One, but the speed of its development is surprising. According to The Hollywood Reporter, TOHO aims to release the new film worldwide by late 2026, with production beginning this year in Norway and New Zealand. This timeline aligns with previous reports of filming starting in Japan later this year, meaning fans might get the next Godzilla movie sooner than expected.

What to Know for Godzilla Minus Zero

The new Godzilla film, officially titled Godzilla Minus Zero but known as the sequel to Godzilla Minus One, will once again be directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki for TOHO and ROBOT. A first look was shown at Godzilla Fest 2025 in Japan, hinting at a significantly darker tone than the previous movie. Given the first film’s focus on devastation, this suggests the new installment will take a much grimmer turn for the characters we know. However, specific plot details and whether any cast members will return remain unknown.

Director Yamazaki announced they’re making a new Godzilla movie, but didn’t share any details just yet. He expressed his excitement about the positive response and was especially pleased to see so many young fans. He believes having a new generation of Godzilla fans is great for the franchise’s future, as it had recently become more popular with adults.

What’s Next for Godzilla?

TOHO, the company behind Godzilla, has several new projects in the works, including potentially revisiting the style of Shin Godzilla. Plus, Legendary Entertainment, which produces the Monsterverse films, will continue expanding the franchise. Their next movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is scheduled for release on March 27, 2027. This film will be directed by Grant Sputore, who is taking over from Adam Wingard, and the script is written by Dave Callaham.

The new movie stars Dan Stevens, returning from previous work, along with Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill. Legendary is also creating a new season of the AppleTV+ series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, but hasn’t announced when it will be released. Since filming finished earlier this year, we can expect news about the release date soon.
