Now that Amazon owns the James Bond franchise and Dennis Villeneuve is set to direct, everyone is eager to find out who will be the next 007. With ‘No Time to Die’ offering a clear conclusion, there’s a lot of speculation about the future of the series – will it explore Bond’s origins, take place in an alternate reality, or simply continue as if the previous film never happened? Martin Campbell, who directed two successful Bond films marking the debuts of both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, recently shared his advice for the new film, offering guidance on what to do – and what not to do.
The focus should be on making a strong Bond film, not reinventing the franchise. Classics like GoldenEye and Casino Royale still hold up today, so there’s no need to drastically change the formula. Essentially, they should avoid messing with something that already works well, especially considering the current global climate offers a lot of potential for compelling Bond stories. The producers should remember that the Bond character and the film itself are the stars, not necessarily the actor playing Bond. Pierce Brosnan was perfect for his era, and Daniel Craig wasn’t a huge star when he was cast – a testament to Barbara Broccoli’s vision. They need to find a skilled actor who fits the role, rather than a pre-established celebrity.
The director of Goldeneye pointed out that one of the things their film had, which the previous Timothy Dalton movies lacked, was humor.
