Gothic 1 Remake Has Sold 500,000 Copies in its First Week

Alkimia Interactive, the developer of Gothic 1 Remake, reported strong sales figures, moving 500,000 copies within its first week. The game launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S last week, and the studio recently shared details about how players are enjoying the RPG.

The recently released Gothic 1 Remake attracted nearly 78,000 players on Steam simultaneously on June 7th, according to the studio. The game has since received over 15,000 user reviews, with an overall “Very Positive” rating.

Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic are very happy with the game’s early success and want to thank everyone who has started playing. They especially appreciate the longtime fans who have supported the Gothic series for the past 25 years. The studio says this achievement wouldn’t have been possible without such a dedicated community.

The launch trailer for Gothic 1 Remake highlighted the game’s improved gameplay and stunning new graphics. Leading up to the release, Alkimia Interactive also shared the intro cinematic, offering a preview of the opening scenes with updated visuals.

Before the remake of Gothic was released, Alkimia Interactive said they wanted to update the game while still keeping the things that made it feel immersive. One of those choices was to leave out a minimap.

In an interview, the game’s director, Reinhard Pollice, explained that the game deliberately doesn’t include a minimap. While they considered making it an optional feature, the team ultimately decided against it, believing players should use the full map to orient themselves if they need to know their location.

The developers also considered adding extra features to expand the world of Gothic 1 Remake, such as card and fishing minigames. Ultimately, they decided against these additions, believing they weren’t essential to the central Gothic gameplay experience.

We were tossing around ideas about adding some extra stuff to do, like little minigames. I was thinking maybe a card game or even fishing could be fun. Who knows what we’ll end up doing with Gothic in the future, but right now those things just didn’t feel essential. We really wanted to focus on making the main game experience as strong as possible, and we didn’t think those minigames were necessary for that.

The remake does make the game more accessible, especially for new players. The original Gothic could be challenging to pick up, so the Gothic 1 Remake now features a detailed quest log that acts like a diary, helping players understand their objectives. They’ve also expanded the crafting system, adding new alchemy and scroll-making options.
