It feels just right, doesn’t it? It’s amazing to experience flying from the comfort of your home on a 4K TV – but what we really want is to actually be in the pilot’s seat, soaring over cities like New York, Tokyo, or Madrid.
I’m so excited! Microsoft just announced that the flight simulator is getting a VR update for PlayStation, and it’s happening really soon! They’re saying “early this year,” which is awesome, but I’m still hoping we get a specific release date soon.
A recent post on the PlayStation Blog shared more details about this feature. According to developer Asobo Studio, they drew inspiration from the impressive way Gran Turismo 7 handles this functionality.
The game has also been specifically optimized for PlayStation VR2. Each cockpit within the game has been carefully adjusted to work with the headset, taking into account the unique controls and instruments in each one.
To improve performance in virtual reality, this release now includes foveated rendering, which focuses processing power on where the user is looking.
Foveated rendering is a technique that makes games look sharp where your eyes are focused, while subtly reducing detail in your peripheral vision. This clever approach lets the PlayStation 5 prioritize its processing power, saving resources and improving overall performance.
Overall, this is incredibly promising. While PSVR2 hasn’t always gotten the attention it deserves during the PS5’s lifespan, when it works well, it’s truly special, and we’re very excited about its potential.
