Gravity Falls Creator Bashes Paramount/Warner Bros Merger

The U.S. Justice Department recently gave the green light to a merger between Paramount/Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery. This deal means that Warner Bros will acquire the studio behind popular franchises like DC Universe, The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and Looney Tunes – beating out Netflix in the process. The entertainment industry is bracing for significant changes as a result. Not everyone is happy about this potential merger; Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, publicly shared his strong concerns.

After Variety announced the approval of the studio merger, creator Alex Hirsch sarcastically commented on social media, saying it was like a monopoly being approved by someone who benefits from monopolies. While the U.S. government has signed off on Paramount and Warner Bros. joining forces, there are still challenges ahead. The European Union hasn’t given its approval yet, and the studios may have to make significant changes to get the green light. Reports suggest that Paramount might need to sell off some of its popular animated and children’s brands, like Nickelodeon, to satisfy EU regulators.

Gravity Falls’ Future

The animated series Gravity Falls concluded in 2016 after two exciting seasons, with Mabel and Dipper saying goodbye to the Mystery Shack. Even though it’s been over a decade since the show ended, it remains incredibly popular with animation fans. Some characters, like Grunkle Stan, have reappeared in spin-off series such as Disney’s Chibiverse, and there’s ongoing speculation about a possible return of the original show.

After the epic battle against Bill Cipher, most of the main characters from Gravity Falls left the Mystery Shack. However, a return for another supernatural summer isn’t out of the question! In 2024, Meredith Roberts, an executive at Disney Branded Television, mentioned ongoing talks with series creator Alex Hirsch about reviving the show. She stated they’re discussing his new book coming from Disney and are also producing short-form content, leaving the door open for a possible continuation – “never say never.”

Fans of Gravity Falls have something to look forward to this fall! While details are still limited, the show is making a return. On September 15th, The Art of Gravity Falls will be released, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the series’ creation. This book, from creator Alex Hirsch and cowriter Rob Renzetti, reveals the show’s origins and features never-before-seen artwork from Hirsch’s personal archives. It includes early character designs, lost episode ideas, cut jokes, hidden easter eggs, and even every one of Mabel’s sweaters – plus much more!
