Despite not performing well in theaters, two disaster films starring Gerard Butler are now finding success on HBO Max. Both Greenland and Greenland 2 are currently among the top 10 most-watched movies on the streaming service, with Greenland 2 claiming the number one spot and the original Greenland at number three, according to data from FlixPatrol.
This is welcome news for the Greenland film series, which hasn’t always been successful in theaters. The first Greenland movie made $52.3 million with a $35 million budget, which was enough for the studio to make a sequel. However, Greenland 2: Migration only earned $44.85 million of its $90 million budget, meaning it wasn’t profitable.
Interestingly, these movies seem to perform better when people watch them at home on streaming services like HBO Max than they do in movie theaters.
What Is Greenland About?
The movie Greenland had a difficult production process from the beginning. Initially, Chris Evans was set to star and Neil Blomkamp was going to direct, but they both ended up leaving the project before filming started. Further complications arose from the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused multiple delays before the film was eventually released through video-on-demand and on streaming platforms like Prime Video and HBO Max.
The film Greenland features Gerard Butler in the lead role, based on a screenplay by Chris Sparling. The cast also includes Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, and Hope Davis.
As a devastating comet races toward Earth, John Garrity, his separated wife, and their son struggle to find safety in Greenland. Facing widespread destruction and witnessing both kindness and cruelty, they embark on a harrowing journey. With the world facing total annihilation, their desperate search for refuge culminates in a last-chance attempt to reach a potential safe zone.
The movie is rated ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 78%, meaning critics generally enjoyed it despite acknowledging its far-fetched plot.
Greenland 2: Migration Continues the Story After the Apocalypse
Although the first Greenland movie had a difficult time, a sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, was announced in 2021. However, the sequel faced challenges of its own when the company distributing it, STX, went bankrupt. Additionally, actress Morena Baccarin was initially hesitant to reprise her role but ultimately agreed to return.
Five years after surviving the comet Clarke and finding refuge in a Greenland bunker, the Garrity family faces a new challenge. They must venture across the devastated landscape of Europe in search of a safe, permanent home.
The movie Greenland 2: Migration received generally negative reviews, earning a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics who felt it didn’t live up to the excitement of the first film. Viewers on Rotten Tomatoes were slightly more positive, giving it a 66% rating, but many still found it just okay and disliked the over-the-top ending.
Greenland and Greenland 2: Migration are both streaming on HBO Max.
