Following the huge success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which earned Oscar nominations and broke box office records, everyone is eager to see what she does next. Unfortunately, it seems we’ll have to be patient for her planned movie adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
Netflix has announced a new release plan for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The movie, described as an epic adventure, will first hit theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, and will then become available on Netflix to stream on April 2nd.
This new release date is quite a bit further off than initially planned. They had previously aimed for a movie theater release in November, followed by streaming on Netflix on Christmas Day.

The film’s release strategy is noteworthy: with a launch that includes IMAX showings, it will have the longest exclusive run in cinemas of any Netflix movie to date. This could signal that Netflix is increasingly dedicated to releasing films in theaters.
Although published sixth, The Magician’s Nephew is actually the first story in terms of the timeline for C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, serving as an origin story for the world of Narnia.
Greta Gerwig wrote and directed the film, which features new actors David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell alongside a stellar cast including Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep, who also provides the voice for Aslan.

Greta Gerwig expressed her excitement about the film’s release, praising both Netflix and IMAX for their collaboration. She shared that the movie will debut in theaters on February 12th and become available on Netflix on April 2nd, and she’s eager for audiences to experience it.
She recalled first reading The Magician’s Nephew as a child and being captivated by the beautiful and imaginative idea of a lion’s song creating the world of Narnia.
I never planned to become a filmmaker, but I’ve always dreamed of creating worlds through music. It’s a huge honor to finally have the chance to bring that vision to life.
Greta Gerwig shared that reading The Chronicles of Narnia sparked her imagination, making her believe in magic, hidden worlds, and exciting adventures. It led her to feel that wonder could be found anywhere and that anyone could be drawn into a grand story.
The CS Lewis Company released a statement expressing how touched they were by Greta Gerwig’s passionate and heartfelt adaptation of “The Magician’s Nephew,” noting her clear love for the story and the world of Narnia.
Look for The Magician’s Nephew in theaters on February 12, 2027, and on Netflix starting April 2, 2027.
