Grey’s Anatomy season 23 release date speculation and latest news

Grey’s Anatomy is still incredibly popular and will be back for a 23rd season, proving it’s one of the longest-running TV shows ever.

After the end of season 22, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is preparing for significant changes, including a possible shake-up of its leadership team and the arrival of new doctors.

The hospital is always busy and unpredictable, and that’s likely to continue.

Here’s everything we know about the series so far…

When is the Grey’s Anatomy season 23 release date?

We don’t know for sure when Grey’s Anatomy will return, but it has consistently aired new seasons every year since it began.

New seasons of Grey’s Anatomy usually begin airing on ABC in the US either during the last week of September or the first week of October, and continue until May.

This has happened every season except for two: season 17 in 2020, which was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and season 20 in 2024, which was affected by the Hollywood strikes of 2023.

Considering this, the team will probably keep performing well in season 23, and we should see them back in action later this year.

We will report back when we know more.

How many episodes will there be in Grey’s Anatomy season 23?

A February report from Deadline suggests the upcoming 23rd season will likely have a smaller budget and fewer episodes than usual.

This is yet to be officially confirmed by ABC or Disney.

While recent seasons (21 and 22) each had 18 episodes, Grey’s Anatomy used to air 25 episodes per season at its most popular.

We will update as more is confirmed.

Who’s in the Grey’s Anatomy season 23 cast?

Because doctors and nurses frequently join and leave the show, it’s hard to know for sure which characters will return to Grey’s Anatomy.

Actors Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, who play Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman respectively, won’t be back for future seasons. They announced in March that their departures would happen at the end of season 22.

As a big fan of the show, I’ve noticed there are three characters who’ve been consistently in pretty much every episode so far. Because of that, I’m fully expecting to see them pop up again in the upcoming season, even if it’s just a small role.

They are:

  • Ellen Pompeo as Dr Meredith Grey
  • Chandra Wilson as Dr Miranda Bailey
  • James Pickens Jr. as Dr Richard Webber

You know, it’s funny—the actress who plays Pompeo started out as a really central character, but her part has gradually gotten smaller. Now she’s more of a supporting player who pops up throughout the series. Still, she’s awesome because she always does the narration for every single episode, which I really appreciate!

Several other main cast members are also contracted for another year, meaning they’re very likely to be back for the next season.

These are:

  • Caterina Scorsone as Dr Amelia Shepherd
  • Camilla Luddington as Dr Jo Wilson
  • Jason George as Dr Ben Warren
  • Chris Carmack as Dr Atticus “Link” Lincoln

Newer additions who are also believed to be returning are:

  • Anthony Hill as Dr Winston Ndugu
  • Alexis Floyd as Dr Simone Griffith
  • Harry Shum Jr as Dr Benson “Blue” Kwan
  • Adelaide Kane as Dr Jules Millin
  • Niko Terho as Dr Lucas Adams
  • Trevor Jackson as Dr Wes Bryant

Is there a trailer for Grey’s Anatomy season 23?

A trailer for the new season of Grey’s Anatomy isn’t available yet, but we’ll add it to this page as soon as it’s released. In the meantime, you can revisit the drama with the trailer for season 22.

As a long-time viewer, I’m happy to report that all things Grey’s Anatomy are now streaming on Disney+. And if you’re not already a subscriber, you can jump in for as little as £5.99 a month – a pretty good deal if you ask me!
