Guillermo del Toro is known for creating many beloved films, and he continues to bring his unique style to new projects like his take on Frankenstein. However, one project he wasn’t able to make was a Justice League Dark movie, which many DC fans still hope will one day be produced. While details have been scarce over the years, del Toro recently shared a lot of information about the characters and planned scenes, including a surprising cameo from a major DC figure.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Josh Horowitz brought up Guillermo del Toro’s planned Justice League Dark movie and asked about the cast. Del Toro explained they hadn’t started casting yet, but he already had a specific actor in mind for one role, and excitedly described a fantastic chase scene involving that character. He also shared that the film would have included a cameo appearance by Batman.
When discussing casting for the film, del Toro explained that he hadn’t started the formal process yet. He already knew he wanted Doug Jones to play Deadman, as he felt confident he could manage the suit and was familiar with Jones’s acting style. He was particularly enthusiastic about the script, saying he felt it naturally drew everyone involved into the project.
Guillermo del Toro explained that John Constantine was intended to be the main character of the ensemble. He was very pleased with the story, especially how characters like the Floronic Man and a well-developed Swamp Thing were integrated. He shared a planned scene where Batman briefly appeared, arranging a plane for the team through a contact, leading to a moment in Bruce Wayne’s office. While he would have loved to pursue that idea previously, he no longer feels that way now.
Although Guillermo del Toro won’t be directing, he still thinks the script is excellent and is impressed with James Gunn’s vision for the new DC Universe. They’ve been in contact – del Toro occasionally messages Gunn to compliment his work, praising his intelligence and approach to Superman. While the script took two years to develop and had some great ideas for visuals, the project never moved beyond that stage, and del Toro isn’t currently involved in bringing it to life.

Guillermo del Toro described an exciting chase scene involving the character Deadman. He explained that Deadman would leap from body to body during the chase – for example, an 80-year-old woman in Central Park would be pursuing the hero, then jump into a traffic cop and a mounted police officer. Del Toro called the sequence very thrilling.
