Gundam Actor Talks New Anime Movie Featuring Fan-Favorite Series

The enduring popularity of Gundam isn’t just about the giant robots; the franchise excels at telling stories across different timelines and alternate universes. For example, Gundam GQuuuuuuX explores a world where the Zion forces won the initial war, Hathaway’s Flash is set years after the conflict between Char and Amuro, and Gundam Wing exists in its own separate universe. Now, a fan-favorite storyline might be revisited if one actor gets their way – they’ve even offered to write the script to make it happen.

Voice actor Kengo Kawanishi is well-known for his work in popular anime series like Demon Slayer, Blue Lock, Kaiju No. 8, The Seven Deadly Sins, Dr. Stone, and Chainsaw Man. He’s particularly fond of his role as Mikazuki Augus in Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. He recently expressed his hope to revisit the character, and even write a sequel, saying he believes continued enthusiasm could lead to another project, perhaps for the show’s 20th or 30th anniversary. He’d like to expand the recent short story, ‘Internal Wedge,’ into a full-length film.

Kawanishi expressed continued interest in developing Urudr Hunt and hopes to continue the story. He emphasized that this is only possible with the ongoing support of his fans over the last decade, and he’s asking for that support to continue. He feels this event marks the beginning of his involvement in future projects and is motivating him to improve his work. He wants to be fully prepared for a future encounter with Wisterio and deliver a truly satisfying performance. This event has strengthened his resolve.

Iron-Blooded Sequel

Kengo recently returned to the world of Gundam after a decade, thanks to the short film Urudr Hunt. He was thrilled to be back and shared his experience, explaining, “I was initially concerned about whether I could perform well, as my voice and physical condition had changed over the past 10 years. But when we were all together during recording, it truly felt like we were back in that world, and I was incredibly happy.”

Kengo was joined on stage by Rina Ikoma, the voice actress for Wisteria from Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. During their conversation about the anime, Kawanishi spoke about Ikoma’s character, noting, “He has qualities I lack. Mikazuki is independent and forges his own way, while Wisteria leads but depends on his friends to cover his weaknesses. I usually try to handle things myself, so seeing his character made me realize it’s okay to ask for help when I need it.”

It wouldn’t be unusual for Iron-Blooded Orphans to get a sequel, as the Gundam franchise has a history of successfully reviving older series. The recent release of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom in Japan was a huge hit, becoming the most successful film in the Gundam series and earning over $35 million worldwide. While it didn’t reach the box office numbers of films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle or Chainsaw Man The Movie, it proved there’s still strong interest in new Gundam stories. SEED Freedom did get a limited release in North America. Hopefully, if a movie is made for Iron-Blooded Orphans, it will achieve similar success to those popular anime films.

I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz about whether Iron-Blooded Orphans might come back. It’s got me wondering what everyone else thinks! I’d love to hear your opinions – feel free to share them in the ComicBook Forum and let’s talk about it!
