The popular anime series Mobile Suit Gundam is heading to live-action with a new movie coming to Netflix, produced by Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks. But that’s not the only way fans will get more Gundam! This year will also bring the sequel to Hathaway’s Flash, titled Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe. The director recently announced exciting news: a third film is confirmed and will be released soon, with more details coming for anime fans.
I recently attended a Japanese event with Murase Shukou, the director of the latest Gundam movie. He was there to talk about the second film, and he confirmed that they’re already working on a third one! He seemed really relieved to have finished the second movie – he even joked about how he’d have been begging for support a couple of months ago. He’s thankful for the warm reception after five years and promised to try and get the third movie out a little faster. He also hinted that there’s a lot to look forward to in Part 3 and hopes everyone will watch it more than once.
Gundam’s Big Theatrical Return
A major reason fans were excited for Hathaway’s Flash wasn’t just its return to the original Gundam story, but also the compelling character of Noa Hathaway. Set years after the Earth Federation and Principality of Zeon conflict, Noa is seen as a successor to both Amuro Ray and Char, embodying traits of both hero and villain. Given the events of the first movie, it’s no surprise Noa has unresolved issues that continue in this new film, now playing in theaters. A release in Western countries is highly likely, particularly with a soundtrack featuring popular artists like SZA and Guns N’ Roses, though a specific North American date hasn’t been announced yet.
The plot of the new live-action Gundam movie hasn’t been announced yet, but many fans expect it will be based on the original Universal Century storyline. This is considered the most popular arc in the Gundam franchise, and it’s often revisited. Even the recent anime, Gundam GQuuuuuuX, explored this universe, though with a twist – it imagined a scenario where Zeon won the initial war. While Gundam will continue to tell new stories in different realities, the first storyline will always be highly valued as the foundation of the entire series.
