Gundam GQuuuuuuX Would Have Worked Better if They Focused On the Right Characters

The animated series titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX was a thrilling yet brief journey, perhaps too brief for its own satisfaction. With merely twelve episodes to weave its tale, the narrative scope remained quite confined. The concept of an alternate timeline from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series is intriguing, especially as it delves into how iconic characters adapt in this new chronology. While characters like Char Aznable retained their classic traits, others, such as Challia Bull, underwent significant development. Despite shedding light on the Zeon faction from the original show, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX unfortunately neglected to introduce compelling new storylines for the original protagonists.

Spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX

In the anime “Gundam GQuuuuuuX,” the primary trio of Machu, Nyaan, and Shuuji are engaging and captivating characters in their own right. However, the audience primarily discovers this alternate timeline through these three’s perspective, with less exploration given to Shuuji, potentially omitting crucial information that could have formed its own series. The finale of “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” suggests there were numerous untold storylines happening concurrently, which viewers never got a glimpse of. While “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is an excellent show with impressive animation, it’s hard not to feel that the series could have been even more impactful if it had delved deeper into other characters’ stories.

Gundam GQuuuuuuX‘s Characters Have Only a Limited Viewpoint

From an onlooker’s perspective, Gundam has consistently portrayed the struggles of the younger generation grappling with the repercussions of their elders’ actions. Characters such as Amuro Ray and Kamille Biden serve as poignant reminders of how power is misused, with children being forced to wage wars initiated by adults, leading to lasting trauma. Although the narrative primarily follows the youth, characters like Amuro and Kamille have been pivotal figures in major storylines.

However, in the case of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, certain significant events and information were withheld due to Machu’s influence, leaving characters such as Nyaan on the sidelines. Key aspects of Kycilia Zabi’s villainous intentions remained unexplored until the penultimate episodes, while Challia’s true allegiance was only disclosed in the final episode.

Towards the final scenes of the series, we were given a hint of events occurring off-camera, with Artesia’s ascension to leadership in Zeon being the most intriguing. Known primarily as Sayla Mass by fans, Artesia is Char’s sister and had minimal screen time in Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Although dedicated Gundam enthusiasts recognize her identity, Artesia was virtually unknown in Gundam GQuuuuuuX, making her sudden appearance at the end seem somewhat puzzling. Characters like Machu and Nyaan never interact with Artesia personally, which gives her late-game appearance a more fan-servicey feel than substantial.

Gundam GQuuuuuuX Should’ve Focused on Artesia, Not Char

In a surprising twist, Artesia from the original Gundam series has often been considered one of the most captivating characters. The portrayal of her adorning a crown in a regal mansion, mirroring Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, hints at an untold tale. Regrettably, the narrative surrounding Artesia’s rise to power and behind-the-scenes machinations received less attention than expected in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Interestingly, Challia, who appeared loyal to Char, was actually working towards placing Artesia on the throne. Similarly, Ramba Ral, another iconic character, was found to be assisting Artesia in her ascent up the mansion’s steps. Sadly, the story of their collaboration never fully unfolded; instead, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX delved into adolescent drama and complex interdimensional events.

Despite all that, “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” remains incredibly captivating, boasting stunning animation and impressive Gundam designs. Regrettably, Machu’s interactions with characters like Artesia and Ramba could have been more substantial, but she still manages to be an intriguing character and one of the stronger recent protagonists in the series. Bandai Namco commemorated the new anime at Anime Expo with the Gundam Rising event, which included live shows and a Q&A session. The team behind “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” shared several intriguing insights about the show during Anime Expo, including that it was inspired by the creators’ aim to provide the original Gundam series with a more optimistic conclusion.
