Gundam Wing Cast Members Reunite for Special Anniversary Event

The journey of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing continues as Sunrise Studios and Bandai Namco continue to host events commemorating the anime’s 30th anniversary. First airing on Japanese television in April 1995, it wasn’t until it aired on Toonami in English-speaking regions that it truly left its mark. The series quickly became extremely popular in countries like the United States, ultimately introducing Gundam to Western audiences. Now, as we celebrate three decades since its debut, Bandai and Sunrise are pulling out all the stops for this significant anniversary.

Bandai showcased a packed panel, titled “Gundam Showcase – Featuring 30 Years of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing,” at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), which included the world premiere of a new animated short that hints at upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam Wing projects.

A special edition of “Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: The Endless Waltz” was held in Tokyo on September 8th. The voice actors behind the lead protagonist Heero (Hikaru Midorikawa) and Relena (Akiko Yajima), respectively, were present at this event. During the gathering, they posed for photos alongside cardboard cut-outs of their characters, which were subsequently posted on the “Gundam Wing” X platform (previously known as Twitter). With whispers of additional “Gundam Wing” projects on the horizon, the reunion of these two stars has only intensified excitement and speculation within the fanbase, despite the fact that they were merely attending an event.

On his official accounts, Midorikawa shared additional images from the event dedicated to the remastered version of “Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: The Endless Waltz” Special Edition. This event aimed to publicize the upgraded re-release of “Endless Waltz,” which debuted on Japanese Dolby Cinemas on September 5th. It is anticipated that “Endless Waltz” will make its appearance in North American theaters at a later time, with the initial screening taking place at Japan Society in New York on October 11th and 12th as part of the Gundam Film Festival. The festival’s lineup also includes screenings for “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway” and “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.

At the “Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: The Endless Waltz” Special Edition event, not only Midorikawa and Yajima attended, but also three English dub voice actors reunited during the Gundam Showcase panel at SDCC. Specifically, Mark Hildreth, Scott McNeil, and Brad Swaile were present at this panel. Hildreth, who lent his voice to the lead character Heero, brought a stoic demeanor to the role that mirrored the character’s mechanical personality. Scott McNeil, who voiced the confident Duo in “Wing,” is an Australian actor living in Canada and is renowned for his work on shows like “Transformers,” “Beast Wars,” “ReBoot,” and “X-Men Evolution.” As for Swaile, he played the sensitive Quatre in “Wing” and is one of the most versatile voice actors within the Gundam franchise. He has voiced Gundam protagonists Amuro Ray and Setsuna F. Seiei in “Mobile Suit Gundam” and “Gundam 00,” respectively.

Bandai has been partnering with various other companies to launch joint products inspired by “Gundam Wing”. In Japan, there’s a unique collaboration between KFC and Gundam Wing, and video games such as Overwatch and Call of Duty feature characters or items modeled after the anime (known as skins).
