I was really hoping for some good news yesterday, especially since it was the 27th anniversary of the original Half-Life – you know, the game that basically launched Valve and is a classic first-person shooter. Sadly, it wasn’t the announcement we’ve all been waiting for. They didn’t confirm Half-Life 3. It’s a bummer, honestly.
But – and stay with me here – Half-Life 3 could still be happening.
It’s easy to see why you’re confused, especially considering how the year has gone. But what about Half-Life 3, the long-awaited sequel Valve never officially announced? The game was the subject of endless rumors for almost ten years before seemingly disappearing, and reports suggest multiple attempts to develop it within Valve were repeatedly cancelled.
Yes, that project – or perhaps a revised version of the one Valve was working on before – seems to be genuinely moving forward this time. We’ll see if it actually comes to fruition, though.
Rumors have been circulating again this year, and interestingly, they surfaced around the same time as Summer Game Fest, just before Gamescom. A project known internally as HLX gained attention, and veteran industry insider Tyler McVicker stated it was a fully playable game – even suggesting it was Half-Life 3. Reports in August claimed the game was nearing completion, with Gabe Follower – who previously leaked accurate information about the game Deadlock – saying it was now being finalized and polished.
After a period of several weeks with little news, McVicker returned at the end of October with updates on the Source 2 Engine. He also announced the addition of a new collection of assets labeled “Science.”
Development gained significant momentum when Valve revealed its Steam Hardware, including the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and a new Steam Controller. Gabe Follower confirmed that plans for HLX were still on track, with an anticipated announcement in 2025. Shortly after, McVicker predicted a Twitch stream revealing more details within the next two weeks, potentially before the end of November.
Okay, so you’re probably thinking, “Is this really happening?” If you’re hearing about this, it usually means Black Mesa is in trouble again – some kind of dimensional mess the military has to clean up, the usual. Honestly, we’ve been down this rumor road before. And next thing you know, I’ll be telling you Bloodborne Remastered is actually real!
Things get interesting here. Mike Straw from Insider Gaming reported that Valve has a major announcement planned for the next few weeks, but it won’t be at The Game Awards. Meanwhile, Tom Henderson, a reliable source of gaming information, mentioned a highly anticipated game slated for release in March, though he couldn’t reveal details just yet. He suggested we might learn more in the coming weeks.

Straw also hinted on X (formerly Twitter) that something is coming “soon enough,” urging people to prepare. But if there’s still time, why hasn’t Valve made an official announcement? Wouldn’t the 27th anniversary of Half-Life have been a perfect opportunity? Fans are starting to wonder if Gabe Newell is simply enjoying his new yacht while leaving them in the dark.
NateTheHate, a trustworthy source of information, has also heard about HLX/Half-Life 3. He says the timing of any announcement is uncertain and complicated. When asked if it would coincide with a specific anniversary, he wasn’t sure, noting a rumor about a noon announcement today that didn’t happen. He’s holding off on sharing details until he can confirm specifics, as there are many potential dates being discussed. He won’t reveal anything further until a release window or official reveal is more certain.
To add to the excitement, Sean Hollister from The Verge noticed security guards at Valve’s headquarters while previewing the Steam Hardware. He hadn’t seen guards on previous visits, and wasn’t sure if their presence was just for that day. Hollister also shared a photo of a Steam Machine with a unique front panel featuring an “H” logo and a covered-up display.
It feels like we’re in the same position as fans waiting for Silksong – eagerly anticipating something that may or may not happen. So, will Half-Life 3 ever be released? Officially, there’s no answer. Valve could even surprise us by announcing or releasing a beta for Deadlock very soon, possibly at The Game Awards.
There definitely seems to be something to these rumors. It’s not just the typical sources sharing information – even broader industry news outlets are reporting it. While no one is ever completely right, where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.
I used to doubt McVicker’s reports, but now I believe them. Here’s why: the Steam Machine represents Valve’s biggest push yet to bring PC gaming into people’s living rooms. With Microsoft focusing on handheld gaming and a connected gaming experience, Valve is clearly aiming to reinforce its position as the leading PC game platform.
What could be better than finally releasing Half-Life 3, a sequel that fans have been waiting for for years?

Honestly, as a fan, it feels like Valve is just in a league of its own right now. They’ve not only proven they can compete with the big consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X on their own turf, but there’s really nowhere else for them to go to prove themselves. They’ve already done everything! They’ve made incredibly popular free-to-play games, created some all-time classics, built the go-to digital store for PC gaming, and even jumped into the handheld market successfully while other companies were still figuring things out.
While there are still plenty of possibilities for future games, Half-Life is unique because its story feels deliberately open-ended. The fact that Valve went to the trouble of revising the ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in Half-Life: Alyx suggests they plan to continue the series eventually.
Look, it’s Valve, right? They can do whatever they want. I never would have guessed Half-Life: Alyx would be VR only, even knowing their history. But that works both ways. If they decided tomorrow to announce Half-Life 3 as a PC exclusive and release it in a few months – like they originally planned with Half-Life 2 before the delays – they totally could. They could ignore all the usual marketing stuff and just do it, because, well, they’re Valve!
Until Valve officially says something, all we can do is be patient. These kinds of rumors often fade away, especially with events like The Game Awards grabbing everyone’s attention. Maybe things will quiet down over the holidays, and we’ll stop speculating about Half-Life 3 or whatever HLX might be. But knowing Valve, an announcement – and a release timeframe – will likely appear when we least expect it.
