Okay, so I’m really excited about this new game, Death Howl. It’s a deckbuilder with that tough-but-fair *Soulslike gameplay, and it’s coming to PC via Steam on December 9th! The developers, The Outer Zone, and publisher 11 bit studios also said it’ll hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch in 2026, which feels like a ways off, but I’m patient if it’s good!
Here is an overview of the game, via 11 bit studios:
Death Howl is a unique game that combines the challenging combat of Soulslike games with the strategy of deckbuilding. It follows Ro, a mother who journeys into the spirit world to try and save her child, refusing to give up hope after a tragic loss.
Though simple in style, Death Howl tackles difficult and emotional subjects. The story feels like a symbolic journey through grief, overcoming hardship, and ultimately finding peace. It’s a challenging quest where progress always comes with a price, and each obstacle requires careful consideration and strategy.
Like many challenging action games, failing isn’t a setback in Death Howl – it’s how you learn. When you fall, enemies respawn, so figuring out how they move and attack is key to winning. The game builds on this idea with strategic, turn-based battles, a card-collecting system, and exploration of dark and dangerous environments.
Each area of the game brings fresh challenges with new enemies and unique abilities. You’ll also discover new cards to customize your strategy and build a deck that fits your playstyle. As you overcome lost spirits, Ro grows stronger in this emotional battle of sorrow and determination.
Will Ro reclaim what was taken from her? Or will the spirit world take her too?
