As a huge Half-Life fan, I’ve been waiting for what feels like forever for the next game after that crazy cliffhanger at the end of Episode 2! Even Half-Life: Alyx, which was amazing in VR, didn’t really scratch that itch. Well, according to Tyler McVicker – who’s been really accurate with Valve news in the past – it sounds like things are moving forward with the new project, currently called HLX. He says Valve has recently updated their Source 2 engine, and this update seems to be all about making things run smoother, which is a big step for a new game!
McVicker reports that previous big updates to Source 2 focused on adding new capabilities. This latest update, however, is different – it’s about using automation to improve performance and free up resources for other game elements. The sound and fluid simulation systems also appear to have been enhanced. These improvements probably won’t be used in games like Dota 2 or Counter-Strike 2, but are likely intended for HLX. Because of how Valve updates its engine, though, some of these features may eventually appear in Counter-Strike 2 as well.
A key clue suggesting this Source 2 update is more connected to the rumored HLX than Counter-Strike 2 is the discovery of a new asset group labeled “Science.” This has generated significant discussion among those who analyze Valve’s game data, and many believe the name refers to scientist characters potentially featured in the new game, such as Dr. Kleiner.
Improvements like these usually happen near the end of a game’s development, but Valve doesn’t always follow strict timelines for its big projects. According to McVicker, we might hear something about HLX in November, though it’s important to remember this is just a rumor and shouldn’t be taken as confirmed.
Back in August, reports suggested that development of Half-Life 3 (or HLX) is nearing completion. This idea came from an update to the Source 2 engine, which included a line of code referencing “thumper machines” – devices that were used in Half-Life 2 to repel Antlions. While this code doesn’t guarantee Antlions will return in Half-Life 3, many believe it was intentionally placed by Valve as a hidden message for data miners, signaling that the game is still in active development.
The update also revealed that Valve is developing more dynamic NPC scripting, which would make characters in the potential sequel respond more realistically to player actions. Reports from May suggest that a complete, playable version of Half-Life 3 exists within Valve for testing.
