Half Man executive producer teases the twists and turns in Richard Gadd’s “continually surprising” Baby Reindeer follow-up

Richard Gadd’s 2024 hit series, Baby Reindeer, established him as a remarkably talented storyteller. The show is shocking and unpredictable, but most importantly, it feels authentic and grounded in reality.

Gadd’s new show for BBC and HBO, starring alongside Jamie Bell, appears to be continuing the darkly comedic tone of his previous work.

During a discussion about the show, executive producer Sophie Gardiner explained that it’s full of unexpected developments – both in the characters’ emotional journeys and in the overall plot – that keep viewers guessing throughout the entire season.

Gardiner described the show as consistently surprising and genuine, calling it a rare and compelling mix. He recommends watching the entire thing.

This six-episode show centers on Ruben and Niall, two young men with contrasting personalities, initially portrayed by actors Stuart Campbell and Mitchell Robertson.

Fate brings these men together, forging an unexpected bond of brotherhood. The story jumps forward thirty years to Niall’s wedding – where actors Gadd and Bell portray them – and a sudden outbreak of violence. From there, the narrative unfolds to reveal the events that led to this explosive confrontation.

During a question-and-answer session about Half Man, Gadd explained that he wrote the first episode’s script before creating Baby Reindeer. He was motivated by broader discussions happening in society about men – their behavior, violence, and emotional restraint.

He shared that he specifically wanted the show to be on the BBC, explaining that watching The Office and seeing how Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant worked inspired him early in his career.

The main four actors are joined by a talented supporting cast including Neve McIntosh, known from Doctor Who, Marianne McIvor, who appeared in The Bombing of Pan Am 103, Charlie De Melo from Rivals, Bilal Hasna of The Agency, Julie Cullen from Traces, Amy Manson of The Nevers, and Anjli Mohindra, recognized for her work in The Lazarus Project.

Half Man will arrive on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Friday 24 April 2026.
