Harry Potter: 7 Things That Still Make No Sense About Snape

What makes the Harry Potter universe so beloved is its huge cast of characters. Even with so many, one figure continues to fascinate and spark debate among fans – nearly ten years after the last book came out. Severus Snape, currently back in the spotlight with the new HBO series, has been described as everything from a flawed hero to a deeply wounded man who lashed out at students. The amazing thing is, there’s a good argument to be made for every single interpretation.

I’ve always been fascinated by Severus Snape. He was absolutely crucial in bringing down Voldemort, but he was also… complicated. Bitter, holding onto old hurts, and seemingly trapped by his past. Even after learning so much about him in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, I still feel like there are pieces missing. I’ve been thinking about it, and there are seven things about Snape that I still can’t quite figure out.

7) His Worst Memory Is the Bullying at the Lake

This memory stands out because it’s more than just Snape being embarrassed. It’s a pivotal moment that shapes the rest of his life: he loses Lily’s affection, is publicly humiliated by James and Sirius, and this is where he truly starts to fall into darkness. While Snape had a difficult childhood and got involved with the Dark Arts at a young age, it’s surprising that this schoolyard incident is what he remembers as his most painful experience. Is this scene actually about bullying, or is it really about his relationship with Lily? The story suggests it was the final blow to their friendship, which makes you wonder what truly happened between them.

By that time, Snape was heavily involved in the Dark Arts and had likely been using hateful language like “mudblood” for some time. Did Lily only recognize how consumed he was by darkness when it affected her directly? Was she simply unwilling to see the truth about him, desperately holding onto the memory of the friend she once knew? And did Snape himself not realize he was about to lose Lily for good until that very moment?

6) How He Became Skilled in Occlumency

As a huge fan of the Harry Potter series, I’ve always been blown away by Snape’s Occlumency skills. Seriously, the fact that he managed to consistently deceive Voldemort – arguably the most powerful Legilimens ever – is incredible. Voldemort was obsessed with control and constantly suspicious, yet Snape kept his true allegiance hidden for years. It wasn’t just about telling lies, though. He was actively shielding his entire mind – suppressing his emotions, memories, everything – like he was holding onto a dangerous secret that couldn’t be revealed. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? How on earth did he do it?

If you consider it, Snape is a very resentful person, constantly struggling with his own feelings. He seems cold, but that’s not the whole story. While it’s possible to control your emotions – Occlumency, for example, requires completely suppressing them – it’s hard to imagine how Snape achieved such mental strength given the difficult and traumatic life he led.

5) Why Didn’t He Just Kill Voldemort Himself?

After Lily’s death, Snape deeply resented Voldemort, which raises the question of why he didn’t try to defeat him directly. He was skilled, had inside knowledge, and, as a double agent, could have attempted an attack. However, doing so would have been incredibly risky, as Snape didn’t know about the Horcruxes – the key to Voldemort’s immortality – and a direct confrontation would likely have failed. Ultimately, Snape’s purpose was to remain a flawless spy. If he’d acted on his anger and tried to kill Voldemort, he would have ruined the carefully constructed cover he and Dumbledore had maintained for years.

However, does this make logical sense within the story’s context? Not completely. Considering Snape desperately pleaded to save Lily’s life, it’s reasonable to think he would have attempted to oppose Voldemort, even if he didn’t fully grasp the extent of the danger. While Snape is clearly a very controlled and calculating individual, as his Occlumency skills demonstrate, Lily’s death is the defining moment of his life. Therefore, his willpower and self-control would have to be extraordinarily strong to maintain that composure.

4) The Truth About His Past

We know Snape had a difficult childhood – he was a lonely boy who was often bullied and desperately sought power and acceptance. He found a temporary escape with the Death Eaters, channeling his frustration through them. However, the story doesn’t fully reveal when Snape began to question his decisions. Was it motivated by fear, pride, or his love for Lily? And what experiences shaped his life and led him to become the man he was?

We know Snape had a difficult childhood – his mother was a witch, but his Muggle father was abusive to both her and Snape. Beyond that, very little is known about his upbringing, and he appears to have been the only one in his family with magical abilities. This raises questions about how and why. Snape is a complex character, which is what makes him so compelling. However, many details about his past remain unclear, leaving some aspects of his personality and actions unexplained.

3) What Did He Really Feel About Harry?

Snape’s behavior towards Harry is a puzzle. He clearly protects Harry, yet also seems to despise him, which is confusing. His actions are likely motivated by his love for Lily, and his resentment towards James. However, it’s hard to know what Snape truly feels. Harry never experiences Snape’s care directly, as Snape seems driven by memories of Lily. Ultimately, Snape acts out of guilt, regret, and unfulfilled love, creating a tense and awkward relationship with Harry.

When you really analyze it, Snape’s feelings towards Harry are incredibly complex, making it difficult to understand what he truly thought. It’s questionable whether Snape himself could reconcile those conflicting emotions, as they clearly caused him inner turmoil. The story could have delved deeper into this internal conflict. Ultimately, his motivations and true personality remain undefined, which is why he continues to be such an enigmatic and complex character.

2) Voldemort Fully Trusted His Loyalty

It’s hard to believe Voldemort ever truly trusted Snape in the Harry Potter series. Snape spent years leading a double life, secretly working against Voldemort while pretending to be loyal. It was a massive risk for Voldemort, because any slip-up from Snape could have been fatal. Voldemort even had reason to be suspicious early on – Snape only heard part of a prophecy and relayed incomplete information. Ironically, it was that very information that ultimately led to Voldemort’s downfall.

If the villain hadn’t learned about the prophecy, he wouldn’t have targeted the baby, and Harry wouldn’t have been destined for greatness. The prophecy only became important because Voldemort decided to try and prevent it. It would have been logical for the Dark Lord to become suspicious of Snape, but he didn’t. Surprisingly, this trust is crucial – it’s a key element that drives the entire story forward.

1) He Never Imagined the Prophecy Could Involve Lily

There’s a major flaw in how the prophecy plays out with Snape’s actions. He’s portrayed as a clever character, yet he fails to realize the danger he’s putting Lily in when he tells Voldemort about the prophecy. Considering Voldemort’s ruthlessness and the prophecy’s specifics – a boy born at the end of July to parents who opposed him – it seems odd Snape wouldn’t consider Lily might be the target, even if Neville Longbottom was also a possibility. He essentially risks the life of the woman he loves without giving it a moment’s thought.

We later see Snape’s memories in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, revealing his desperate plea to Dumbledore to protect Lily. He begged Dumbledore to hide the Potters, and Dumbledore agreed on the condition that Snape leave the Death Eaters and become a spy. Unfortunately, this happened too late to save them. However, it shows a vulnerable side to Snape, proving he wasn’t just cold and calculating, but a flawed and emotional person.
