I was really touched to hear that Daniel Radcliffe reached out to the young actor, Dominic McLaughlin, who’s taking on the role of Harry Potter in the new HBO series. Apparently, Dan wrote him a letter! What a classy move, offering support and probably some great advice to someone about to step into such a huge role. It’s lovely to see that kind of connection between the actors playing the same character across different versions.
Daniel Radcliffe, best known for playing Harry Potter in eight movies, shared on Good Morning America that he contacted the team behind the new production because he knew some of the people involved.
“I wrote to Dominic and sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back,” the actor said.
I didn’t want to loom over their lives, but I really felt the urge to write to him, just to wish him all the best. I wanted to tell him I hoped he had an amazing experience, even better than the one I had – and honestly, I had a fantastic time, but I genuinely wanted him to surpass it.
The actor shared that seeing pictures of the young performers makes him want to give them a hug. He remarked on how young they seem, and how it makes him reflect on his own experiences at that age. He added that it’s heartwarming to see them enjoying themselves and hopes they’re having fun.
Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint both started filming the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, when they were eleven years old. Emma Watson was ten at the time.
HBO revealed in 2023 that it will create a TV series based on all seven books in JK Rowling’s famous children’s series.
In May 2025, the main child actors were officially announced: Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione, and Alastair Stout will play Ron.
The show will also star John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Frost will play the gamekeeper and professor of Care of Magical Creatures.

JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism for her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a detailed essay explaining her views on sex and gender, which was challenged and refuted by LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall.
Rowling has publicly expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In this post, she stated that she does not believe in the concept of transgender children and argued against the idea that someone’s gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.
The main actors from the Harry Potter films – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – have publicly disagreed with J.K. Rowling’s views and voiced their support for the transgender community. Meanwhile, other cast members like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come to Rowling’s defense amid the criticism she’s faced.
