The new Harry Potter TV series coming to HBO is diverging from both the books and the films. While early looks suggested it would closely resemble the movies in terms of visuals and costumes, it’s now clear the show is making significant changes. Several characters who appeared in the films have been cut, including Peeves the Poltergeist, Professor Binns, and Ronan. Surprisingly, some characters not even present in the original books, like Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel, are also being included.
Filming locations suggest that Godric’s Hollow, Harry Potter’s childhood home, will appear in the new series. Photos from the set, shared by Wizarding World Direct on X, show recognizable locations in the English village of Lustleigh – including the post office, a pub called The Lion’s Heart, and St Jerome’s Church. Decorations indicate the scenes are set around Halloween.

Godric’s Hollow is an important place in the Harry Potter universe, but we don’t see much of it until the final book, *The Deathly Hallows*. That’s when Harry and Hermione visit while searching for Horcruxes. Before that, Harry has brief, broken memories of the night his mother died there.
What Godric’s Hollow Means For Harry Potter’s TV Show (& Lord Voldemort)
There are two likely reasons why the show is filming in Godric’s Hollow for the first season of Harry Potter. Both explanations fit with the idea that the events happen around Halloween, as the attack on Harry’s parents happened on October 31st, 1981.
One straightforward opening could show Hagrid rescuing baby Harry after Lord Voldemort’s attack and apparent defeat. This naturally leads to the scene of Hagrid bringing Harry to Albus Dumbledore at Privet Drive, and then leaving him with the Dursleys. We might even see Sirius Black early on, providing Hagrid with his flying motorcycle to help transport the baby.
It’s more probable we’ll see extensive flashbacks to the night Lord Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter, but couldn’t kill Harry. I think showing this as the opening scene of the TV series would be a smart move. It would offer something new compared to the books and films, immediately establish Voldemort as a threat, and create a striking contrast between the darkness of that night and the wizarding world’s celebration of his defeat – all while showing the confusion of Muggles like Vernon.
There’s been talk that HBO is starting to cast the role of Voldemort for their new Harry Potter series. In the original films, Ralph Fiennes didn’t appear as Voldemort until the fourth movie, *The Goblet of Fire*, so this would be a significant change. While they could simply show Voldemort on the back of Professor Quirrell’s head, that wouldn’t require a full casting process. If they *are* casting an actor for Voldemort – or have already done so in secret – it would explain why they’re filming scenes set in Godric’s Hollow.
A new Harry Potter series is being made for HBO and HBO Max, and is planned to premiere around 2027.
