This Christmas, the Harry Potter series is coming to HBO Max. According to HBO’s head of content, the show will revisit the stories from all seven books. Because it’s a longer-form series, it will be able to include details and moments from the books that weren’t possible in the movies, which had to fit entire novels into just two hours. This is what fans are most excited about – finally seeing beloved parts of the books come to life on screen.
Although fans are enthusiastic about the new series, HBO plans to stick closely to the source material. Casey Bloys, the head of HBO and Max Content, recently told Radio Times that they have no intention of building a larger, interconnected universe like Marvel or DC. He explained that adapting the books will be a substantial undertaking in itself, and that’s their primary focus. They want to faithfully recreate the story as written, rather than expanding it into something more.
Harry Potter Could Become a Huge Franchise Similar to Game of Thrones

It’s smart that HBO Max is focusing solely on the Harry Potter books right now. It’s a little disappointing, though, that they don’t seem to have plans to create a larger franchise like Knight of the Seven Kingdoms did for Game of Thrones. The positive side is that HBO Max is dedicated to making the best Harry Potter series possible, and they aren’t rushing to set up future spin-offs or expansions.
HBO Max has a fantastic opportunity with the Harry Potter series: to create a retelling of the books that surpasses what fans imagined when they saw the movies. This project needs to be the team’s top priority – writers, directors, actors, and HBO leaders all need to be fully dedicated. But that doesn’t mean this is the end of the Harry Potter universe; there’s still potential for more stories in the future.
The Fantastic Beasts films proved there were compelling stories beyond Harry Potter and his immediate circle, even though that series ultimately faltered due to some poor creative choices. There’s still plenty of potential for spin-offs, like exploring the adventures of the Marauders or showing Harry as an adult Auror. While it’s still premature to plan these series, HBO Max is likely considering how to build on the renewed interest in the Harry Potter universe for the future.
