Harry Potter TV series confirms special behind-the-scenes spin-off – and it’s days away

HBO will be taking fans behind the scenes of its upcoming Harry Potter TV series in a new special.

Premiering on Sunday, April 5th, “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic” will give fans a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of the HBO series, showcasing the work of the artists involved.

The special will include interviews with cast members like John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), and Paapa Essiedu (Snape). Nick Frost, who plays Hagrid in the series, will provide narration.

HBO shared a sneak peek of an upcoming episode featuring John Lithgow. He explains the show aims to expand on the beloved Harry Potter stories, bringing to life the hidden details and untold events that fans have always imagined.

The video offers viewers a peek behind the scenes, featuring actors McTeer and Essiedu discussing how the show was made. Production designer Mara LePere-Schloop shared her excitement, saying, “Being able to create sets on this large scale is a dream come true. We really wanted to capture the fun and wonder of being a magical child.”

She also explained how exciting it is to work on such a large-scale project, saying they’re creating a much more detailed and immersive world than audiences have seen before.

To celebrate 25 years since audiences first entered the world of Hogwarts, a new special takes viewers behind the scenes of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. It showcases the incredible work and detail put into bringing J.K. Rowling’s books to life for a new generation, as told by the talented artists, craftspeople, and technicians who made it all happen.

The special takes viewers behind the scenes with interviews from the people who cast the actors and designed the sets, costumes, and creatures. It shows how much work went into finding the perfect Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and highlights the incredible skill and dedication that brought this magical world to life.

JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism for her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she published an extensive statement explaining her views on sex and gender, which was challenged and refuted by LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall.

As a longtime fan of J.K. Rowling’s work, I was really disheartened to see some of her views expressed on social media, specifically a post on X (formerly Twitter) from 2024. In it, she stated that she doesn’t believe in the concept of transgender children and doesn’t agree with the idea that someone can feel they were born with the wrong gender. It’s a position I find deeply troubling and difficult to reconcile with the inclusive world she created in her books.

In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.

As a big fan of the Harry Potter films, it’s been really interesting – and sometimes heartbreaking – to see how the cast has responded to J.K. Rowling’s recent statements. I admire how Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson have all publicly supported the transgender community and made it clear they don’t share her views. It’s also been surprising to see actors like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent come to her defense, even with all the criticism she’s faced. It’s a complex situation, and I respect that everyone involved is navigating it in their own way.

I’m so excited! For all my fellow Harry Potter fans, “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic” is coming to HBO Max this Sunday, April 5th. We’ll finally get a behind-the-scenes look at how the magic was made!
