Stefan Golaszewski, the creator of shows like Mum, Him & Her, and Marriage, is back with a new drama. This one promises to be a moving and honest look at the challenges of love and the heartbreak of losing a pregnancy.
We’re getting a first glimpse of the new series, ‘Babies,’ featuring Siobhán Cullen, known for ‘Bodkin,’ and Paapa Essiedu, from ‘Black Mirror,’ in two distinct and separate scenes.
I just saw some stills from this new docuseries, ‘Babies,’ and they’re really striking. One photo shows these parents looking incredibly worried outside what looks like a doctor’s office, and the next is them totally relaxed and laughing on a bus. It really hits you that this six-episode series isn’t just going to be cute baby moments – it’s going to delve into some really complex and raw emotions around parenthood.
I just read the synopsis for this new series, and it sounds incredibly moving. It centers around Lisa and Stephen, a couple in their thirties, and it honestly feels very real – they’re dealing with the heartbreak of repeated miscarriages. But it’s not just sadness; the description promises a lot of warmth, humor, and a deep, unwavering love between them, even through all that grief. It seems like a really powerful story about how a couple navigates something truly devastating together.

Charlotte Riley (from The Peripheral) and Jack Bannon (from Pennyworth) play Amanda and Dave, a new couple figuring out their relationship and whether they’re a good match. As Amanda and Dave’s complicated romance develops, it starts to strain the long-time friendship between Stephen and Dave, especially as Stephen and his partner navigate a pregnancy.
The show was first revealed last year, and creator Golaszewski praised the cast, saying Paapa, Siobhán, Jack, and Charlotte are all exceptionally talented. He highlighted their ability to bring warmth, nuance, and genuine emotion to a story that hasn’t been told before.
Stefan Golaszewski, the creator and director of the new series Babies, is back on the BBC following the success of his 2022 show, Marriage. Marriage, starring Nicola Walker and Sean Bean, realistically portrayed the ups and downs of a long-term marriage and was highly praised by critics. Many expect Babies to be another strong offering from Golaszewski.
When the show was announced, Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, explained that ‘Babies’ has all the qualities audiences appreciate in Stefan Golaszewski’s writing – a heartfelt, realistic, and emotionally honest portrayal of the challenges couples face during a period of life rarely seen on TV.
It’s easy to see why this exceptional show drew such talented actors, and it’s been a privilege watching them perform Stefan’s writing.
The series stars actors familiar to many viewers. Cullen recently appeared in Netflix’s Bodkin, and is also known for her work in The Long Call, The Dry, and Obituary. Essiedu first gained recognition for his role in I May Destroy You, and has since led projects like The Lazarus Project, Gangs of London, and the Demon 79 episode of Black Mirror.
He’ll also be acting with Keeley Hawes in the new Jack Thorne drama, Falling, a story about a nun and a priest who unexpectedly develop feelings for each other. Additionally, Essiedu will play Severus Snape in the upcoming HBO series, joining a talented British cast including Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, Johnny Flynn, Paul Whitehouse, and Katherine Parkinson.
