The upcoming reboot of HBO’s Harry Potter TV series doesn’t air until next year, yet discussions about Season 2 are already underway. It’s not just fans who are speculating and placing wagers on how this revival of J.K. Rowling’s popular fantasy saga will progress. Bertie Carvel, who portrays Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge in the series, is uncertain if he’ll appear in Season 2. The character of the Minister of Magic plays a significant role in Harry Potter’s story, but whether Carvel continues to play Fudge in the series for its second season hinges on how well the character is received by fans.
Last week, Carvel shared with the UK newspaper The Times that he is just as uncertain as the fans about Fudge’s future in the series and his potential return after the first season. “I’m unsure how it will fit into my life,” Carvel admitted. “Whether I return [for more episodes] largely depends on what the audience thinks. Frankly, I’ll be angry if it’s not a fantastic role.

We can alleviate his concerns there. Fudge, who served as Minister of Magic throughout much of Harry’s years at Hogwarts, was the leader of the wizarding world’s government in the United Kingdom. Fudge was a morally ambiguous and complex political figure known for his desire to maintain power and promote a false sense of tranquility. For most of his term, he denied Voldemort’s return, but after witnessing Voldemort personally during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, he was forced to acknowledge the truth and resign from his position.
Carvel admitted that initially he might have steered clear of a project like [Potter] that allows him to revisit a character multiple times. However, after reading the script for the upcoming series, he found himself drawn to it. “I’ve read the books,” he revealed, “but I hadn’t done so before I was offered the role. I might have seen one or two of the movies.” As a young boy, if Carvel had come across these books, he would have been hooked. Hence, he approaches this project with a very open and receptive mindset.
As a passionate movie buff, I’m thrilled about the prospect of Timothy Carvel stepping into the shoes of Cornelius Fudge in the upcoming Harry Potter series. His extensive background in portraying larger-than-life political figures makes him an ideal choice for this role. He breathed life into U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair on the final seasons of ‘The Crown’ and brought U.S. President Donald Trump to the stage in Mike Bartlett’s play ‘The 47th.’ With such a remarkable resume, I can hardly wait to see how he’ll interpret Fudge’s flamboyant antics in the Harry Potter universe. If he reprises the role, Carvel will undoubtedly have ample opportunity to delve deeper into the character compared to his on-screen predecessor, Robert Hardy, who played Fudge in the films. Since the series is planning to dedicate a whole season to each book instead of compressing it into a two-and-a-half-hour film, Carvel will have more time to explore and flesh out the character.
It appears that Carvel and Fudge are perfectly suited for their roles; consequently, it’s unlikely the actor will face concerns about repeating his performance as the Harry Potter series progresses.
