The upcoming HBO TV series based on Harry Potter appears to be on the right track, according to the latest casting announcements. Fifteen years after Daniel Radcliffe finished playing Harry, the Wizarding World is being reimagined for both new and existing fans. The project was first discussed in 2021, but wasn’t officially confirmed until 2023. Since then, casting and production have moved forward smoothly, with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton set to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger respectively.

HBO has announced that the new Harry Potter TV series will begin streaming on Christmas Day in 2026, with eight episodes planned for the first season. The exact reason for this cut has never been officially explained. Now, it appears the new HBO series intends to bring Peeves to life. He’s not the only character from the books who was left out of the films and is now being reintroduced in the TV show.

Casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann were looking for someone to play Colin Creevey, the enthusiastic Gryffindor who was a huge fan of Harry and tragically died during the Battle of Hogwarts. Although Hugh Mitchell played Colin in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets back in 2002, he didn’t appear in any other films. Now, with Colin and the character Peeves both being cast, HBO seems to be taking full advantage of the extended, series format to include more characters.

Each season of the new TV series will cover one of the Harry Potter books, suggesting it could last at least seven seasons – assuming each book isn’t divided into two parts like the final movie was ( Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 & 2). Everything indicates HBO plans to adapt the entire story, with the finale likely airing in the early 2030s. Even though that’s years away, initial casting choices for characters like Peeves and Colin hint at a more satisfying conclusion than what we saw in the films.

David Yates and his team successfully concluded the Harry Potter film series. Splitting the final book into two movies was a smart decision given how much story there was. However, because of limited time, they had to carefully select which parts of the books to include. Notably, characters like Peeves and Colin were left out of the Battle of Hogwarts, even though they were important in the novels.
