As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m really excited about the new HBO show, and honestly, it looks like they’re making Hogwarts even better than in the movies! They’re trying to be really faithful to the books, while also giving us that familiar, nostalgic feeling, but also making it their own thing – which is a tough line to walk. But the first trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone gave me hope that they’re pulling it off! There are moments that feel a little too similar to the films, and I guess that’s understandable – the movies really nailed the look, and that imagery is everywhere now, from theme parks to all the merchandise.
It’s still unclear how different the new series will be from the Harry Potter films, but early previews suggest some significant improvements. We’ll see more of Harry’s difficult childhood with the Dursleys, and it appears even harsher than what was shown in the movies. Beyond that, the glimpses of Hogwarts and school life hint at a richer and more detailed experience than we got in the films.
Harry Potter’s Remake Will Have More Hogwarts Scenes Than the Movies

As a huge fan, I always felt Hogwarts itself should be a main character in the movies, just like in the books. We definitely saw Hogwarts, but not nearly enough! I get that movies have time limits, but as the series got more serious, they really cut back on those little moments of everyday life at school – you know, the stuff that makes reading the books so magical. There was just so much plot to cover, and I understand that, but those ‘slice-of-life’ scenes are really important for getting to know the characters and truly feeling like you’re at Hogwarts.
The new TV show clearly pays attention to detail, even when compared to the first Harry Potter movie, The Philosopher’s Stone. We’re seeing scenes that fans of the books will love, like Harry and Ron running around Hogwarts, toasting marshmallows in the Gryffindor common room – a moment taken straight from the pages – having a snowball fight, and even sitting through Professor Binns’ famously dull History of Magic class, which was left out of the films. They’re also including things that didn’t make it into the movies, like the Quidditch match between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, with Professor Snape refereeing, and the mischievous poltergeist, Peeves – though we haven’t met the actor who will play him yet.
The show’s longer length definitely helps it stand out, especially in the early seasons, allowing it to include far more detail than the movies could. It’s still early days, but this is a promising start. The show successfully creates the feeling that Hogwarts is a real, bustling place full of life and the characters we know.
The story works best when it balances the everyday experiences of Hogwarts – classes, friends, and typical school life – with the serious threat of Lord Voldemort. Spending more time within the walls of Hogwarts, even with scenes that don’t directly move the main story forward, is a key strength of the series.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will debut on Christmas Day, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
