Director Robert Eggers is diving into classic horror this year. After releasing his reimagining of Nosferatu in 2024, he’s following it up with a new werewolf movie, Werwulf, coming to theaters on Christmas Day. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson. Eggers has described Werwulf as his darkest project yet, and a first look was recently shown to audiences at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
We at ComicBook got a sneak peek at some footage from Werwulf. While many details are still secret, it sounds like the movie will be a gritty and intense werewolf story, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s transformation into the creature. Here’s what we saw:
First Werwulf Footage Revealed at CinemaCon
The trailer for Werwulf starts with a close-up of villagers dancing around a bonfire. We then see Johnny Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson arrive in town and learn about local legends of werewolves. The trailer quickly cuts to a series of dark and unsettling images, including a quick glimpse of someone turning into a werewolf. It ends with Taylor-Johnson transforming in a dimly lit barn, screaming and covered in foam – a truly frightening scene.
Werwulf Is a Nosferatu Reunion of Sorts

If the actors in Werwulf seem familiar, that’s because several of them – including Depp, Taylor-Johnson, and Dafoe – also starred in director Eggers’ Nosferatu. This makes Werwulf a bit of a reunion for this talented group. Eggers often works with the same actors on different films – Dafoe, for example, has appeared in Nosferatu, The Lighthouse, and The Northman as well. While details about Werwulf are still limited, the cast’s strong performance in Nosferatu, along with early footage shown at CinemaCon, suggests it could be a genuinely frightening movie.
Werwulf opens in theaters December 25, 2026.
