While many horror series have come and gone, the 1989 show Tales from the Crypt remains incredibly influential. Originally airing on HBO over 35 years ago, it’s still well-remembered today, and is now finding a new audience as a streaming success, even 30 years after it ended.
According to FlixPatrol, Tales from the Crypt is currently the third most popular show on AMC+ in the U.S., demonstrating the continued appeal of this classic horror series. Originally based on the EC Comics series, Tales from the Crypt ran for seven seasons and included 93 episodes.
What Was Tales from the Crypt About?
William Gaines and Steven Dodd brought Tales from the Crypt to HBO. Gaines, who also co-edited EC Comics and helped found the satirical magazine Mad, was originally a creator of the Tales from the Crypt comics that ran from 1950 to 1955.
I was a huge fan of Tales from the Crypt! Each episode was basically a self-contained horror story, and the best part was the Cryptkeeper! He was this really funny, creepy host who introduced everything. He wasn’t a real person like in the original comics, though – on the show, he was this amazing animated corpse. The voice actor, John Kassir, was perfect for the role and did it for all seven seasons. It’s so cool to realize he also voiced Deadpool in a bunch of Marvel video games later on!
Featuring a remarkable cast including Adam West, Daniel Craig, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Catherine O’Hara, Ewan McGregor, and many other well-known actors, Tales from the Crypt was well-received by critics and led to the creation of several spin-off shows.
Tales from the Crypt Had Multiple Spin-Offs
The popularity of HBO’s Tales from the Crypt led to several follow-up projects. A spin-off series premiered in 1995, and Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood followed in 1996. Even though the 2002 horror movie Ritual wasn’t officially part of the Tales from the Crypt series, the Cryptkeeper appeared on its video releases.
Tales from the Cryptkeeper was a spooky, animated show for kids that originally aired on ABC, featuring John Kassir as the host, The Cryptkeeper. Although it ended after two seasons, it came back for a third season called New Tales from the Cryptkeeper. Elizabeth Hanna voiced The Old Witch, and David Hemblen played The Vault Keeper in the series.
In 1997, HBO released a show inspired by Tales from the Crypt called Perversions of Science. While Tales from the Crypt focused on horror, Perversions of Science leaned into science fiction. Instead of a creepy host like the Cryptkeeper, this series featured Chrome, a computer-generated robot voiced by Maureen Teefy, who introduced each story. Unfortunately, Perversions of Science wasn’t as popular and was quickly canceled.
Even though horror shows are still popular, Tales from the Crypt remains incredibly influential thirty years after it ended. Its distinctive way of telling stories, the unforgettable Cryptkeeper, and appearances by many well-known actors all contribute to why it continues to be a popular choice for streaming audiences.
Tales from the Crypt is available to stream on Shudder and AMC+ in the United States.
