HBO Is Officially Fixing Game Of Thrones Season 8 & The Show’s Biggest Mistake Can Be Corrected

Despite being one of the most heavily criticized seasons of any TV show, HBO appears to be considering ways to improve the final season of Game of Thrones. Many believe bringing back a key character could address the biggest issues with its ending. Game of Thrones remains one of the most popular and influential shows ever made.

For almost ten years, Game of Thrones was the biggest show on television and constantly talked about. But the final season was widely criticized for its problems, and the show lost much of its impact. Luckily, a new prequel series has brought back some of the excitement, and HBO appears to have more *Game of Thronesrelated projects in the works.

The Game Of Thrones Franchise Will Grow Beyond Just Prequels

HBO’s House of the Dragon has been very successful, and has already been renewed for a fourth season. Another Game of Thrones prequel is planned for 2026, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will return for a second season. However, even with these new shows, the problems with the final season of Game of Thrones remain, though a different approach might be able to address them.

During the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, author George R.R. Martin shared that HBO is working on at least one follow-up series to Game of Thrones. He mentioned that alongside the previously announced prequel series—of which there are reportedly five or six—there’s also a sequel or two in the works. This isn’t the first time rumors of a Game of Thrones sequel have surfaced.

Kit Harington was developing a sequel series that would have continued the story of his Game of Thrones character, Jon Snow, after the events of the finale. The show would have focused on Jon’s life north of the Wall. Although Harington has said the project is currently stalled, HBO executive Casey Bloys suggested it could be revisited in the future.

HBO Needs To Find A Way To Bring Back The Night King To Fix Game Of Thrones Season 8

With Casey Bloys suggesting a Jon Snow sequel isn’t completely off the table and George R.R. Martin confirming more Game of Thrones shows are in the works, I’m optimistic that the Jon Snow project will move forward. It could be exactly what’s needed to address the criticisms of Game of Thrones‘ final season.

Jon Snow was one of the central characters in Game of Thrones, alongside Daenerys Targaryen. Like many characters in the final season, his ending didn’t satisfy fans. Many felt Jon deserved a better fate than exile, considering all he did to protect Westeros. A sequel series could potentially address both this and a major issue with the season 8 villain.

The Night King is a truly memorable character from Game of Thrones. The show heavily suggested a final battle between him and Jon Snow, but surprisingly, Arya Stark ultimately defeated him with a sudden attack. Fans were expecting a different outcome, as the series seemed to be building towards a Jon Snow versus Night King confrontation.

One of the show’s main villains died in a dimly lit episode – it was so dark, much of the action at Winterfell was hard to follow – and unfortunately, we didn’t get to see his conflict with Jon Snow fully play out.

Fans have lots of ideas about how the Night King might come back, and given the magic in Game of Thrones, a sequel featuring a rematch between Jon Snow and the Night King would be a great way to do it. This could also correct some of the issues with season 8. While it’s uncertain if this will happen, bringing back Jon Snow and the Night King would be a way to improve Game of Thrones without needing to redo the final season.
