After the five-season run of Gotham, which told the story of Detective James Gordon’s early career in the city before Batman appeared, the show’s creator created another prequel. That new show first aired in 2019 and will soon be removed from HBO Max.
Bruno Heller, the creator of Gotham, also executive produced and ran Pennyworth. Danny Cannon, who showran Gotham, was an executive producer on the series. Starting January 31st, Pennyworth will no longer be available on HBO Max.
The show Pennyworth starred Jack Bannon as a young Alfred Pennyworth, the same character played by Sean Pertwee in Gotham. It told the story of Alfred’s life before he became Bruce Wayne’s butler, focusing on his days as a former British Special Air Service (SAS) soldier and his work running a security firm in London. The first two seasons centered on Alfred becoming a target for a dangerous fascist group called the Raven Society.
Alongside Steve Bannon playing Alfred Pennyworth, the show Pennyworth features Ryan Fletcher as Wallace “Dave Boy” MacDougal, Dorothy Atkinson (known from Saltburn) as Mary Pennyworth, Ben Aldridge (from Knock at the Cabin) as Thomas Wayne, and Emmy Paetz as Martha Kane. The series first aired in 2019 but was cancelled after three seasons, with the final episode broadcast on November 22, 2022.
The TV show Pennyworth has received generally positive reviews, scoring 66% from critics and 89% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season is the highest-rated, earning a 73% score from critics and a 91% score based on over 250 audience reviews.
