HBO Max Users Only Have 3 Days To Watch the Best Sci-Fi Reboot Ever Made (That Started a Masterpiece Trilogy)

Many people worry about remakes ruining beloved sci-fi films like Back to the Future, but surprisingly, several reboots have actually been better than the originals. Films like Cronenberg’s The Fly and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are now considered classics, and the Battlestar Galactica TV series was exceptionally well-received. However, the Planet of the Apes reboot series stands out for its impressive length and consistent quality – few other reboots have achieved that level of success over time.

Fans of the Planet of the Apes series, take note: Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be leaving HBO Max on December 7th, just a week after its sequel was removed. While sometimes movies get a last-minute extension on streaming services, that doesn’t seem likely this time. If you’re looking for a good sci-fi film to watch, now is the time to revisit Rupert Wyatt’s critically acclaimed movie.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Kicked Off The Greatest Modern Sci-Fi Trilogy

As much as I love Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, I think Rise of the Planet of the Apes really laid the groundwork for what became an incredible series. Looking back at those first three films – Rise, Dawn, and War – it’s hard not to call them a modern masterpiece, especially since they beautifully told the story of Caesar, played brilliantly by Andy Serkis, during the very beginning of the apes’ rise. It all happened before the big time jump we see in the new film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes begins subtly, gradually building into a relevant and frightening story about the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition and the impact of a pandemic. Despite the dark premise, the film remains surprisingly optimistic, portraying Caesar as a sympathetic hero leading a justified rebellion. While some humans are shown as kind, the film positions humanity as the primary antagonist—a theme beautifully developed in the following movies. This film laid the groundwork for the ideas explored in the sequels, and it’s arguably a stronger starting point for this rebooted series than the original Planet of the Apes was for its own, less consistent, sequels.

Where You Can Watch The Other Planet of the Apes Movies

Okay, ape fans, here’s the deal. If you’re looking to binge the Planet of the Apes reboot series, it’s a bit complicated right now. Good news is, you can still find both Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes together on Hulu – which, for many of us, means they’re also available through Disney+. However, HBO Max is holding onto War for the Planet of the Apes and the newest installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. So, for the complete story, you’re going to need both a Hulu/Disney+ and an HBO Max subscription – at least for the time being. It’s a bit of a streaming split, unfortunately.

If you’re looking to watch the classic Planet of the Apes films, finding them can be a bit tricky. The original starring Charlton Heston isn’t on major streaming services, but you can find it on IndieFlix for just $4.99 a month. Tim Burton’s remake is currently available on Hulu. While the first two sequels, Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Escape from the Planet of the Apes, aren’t streaming, you can rent them. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is free on Plex, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes is available to rent or buy. Overall, you might have an easier time enjoying the newer Planet of the Apes films and the 2011 reboot.
