The movie Spaceballs takes the classic Star Wars story and turns it completely upside down. The story is just as crazy as it sounds: in a faraway galaxy, the planet Spaceball is running out of air, and they need a product called Perri-Air to survive. Desperate, their leader, President Skroob, sends the villainous Dark Helmet to kidnap Princess Vespa of the air-filled planet Druidia, hoping to trade her for air. Luckily, the Princess is rescued by the daring space pilot Lone Starr and his loyal, half-man, half-dog sidekick, Barf, and their plan actually works!

Mel Brooks’s movie playfully spoofs popular space films from the past ten years, blending the most ridiculous elements into a consistently funny package, according to Cathy Burke of United Press International. It’s intentionally over-the-top and relies on physical comedy, which is perfect for this type of film – and perhaps why some critics weren’t impressed. Michael H. Price, for example, felt the movie lacked substance, calling it a pointless repeat of the style Brooks used successfully in Blazing Saddles thirteen years prior. While we don’t share that view, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Look, let’s be real, Spaceballs is just wonderfully silly, and that’s precisely why I love it. If you’re looking for something to put on after Thanksgiving dinner, while you’re enjoying a slice of pie, you absolutely should watch it.
