People keep rediscovering one of HBO’s biggest shows from the 2010s and revisiting it on streaming platforms. This week, the four-episode sci-fi Western series is enjoying a surge in popularity as viewers rent it on demand, four years after it originally ended.
As of June 3rd, Westworld is currently ranked at number 6 in the Top TV Shows chart on the Apple TV Store in the United States. This is the show’s highest ranking in the last week. Westworld has seen fluctuating positions, moving between 20th place and the mid-teens before finally reaching number 6.
Westworld is performing well on the list of top TV shows. It’s joined by another popular HBO series, Euphoria, at number 4, and another show at number 8. The chart also includes well-loved animated programs like Rick and Morty, currently at number 1, and DuckTales at number 7.
Westworld Needed 1 More Season to Conclude Its Story
As a reviewer, I remember being absolutely blown away by the first season of Westworld back in 2016 – it was a huge hit with both critics and audiences! The creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, actually had a five-season arc mapped out from the beginning. Sadly, the show just didn’t maintain that initial momentum. While the first season was a smash, the next three seasons saw viewership and critical praise steadily decline, which is a real shame considering the ambitious vision they originally had.
The fourth season ended with some unresolved storylines, and the creators, Nolan and Joy, had intended to finish the series with a fifth season. However, HBO decided to cancel Westworld despite still paying the main actors for that planned, but now cancelled, season.
Aaron Paul, who became part of the show in its third season, says Nolan and Joy haven’t given up on their original plan. In 2025, he explained, “We’re still talking about making it happen. I don’t want to promise anything, but we’d really like to bring the story full circle.”
Westworld Is Getting Its Full Circle Moment, Just Not in the Way Fans Hoped
A year after Paul’s statements, Warner Bros. confirmed a new movie was in development, though it wasn’t the project Nolan and Joy had envisioned. In May 2026, they announced David Koepp would be writing the screenplay.
The story of Westworld actually began with a 1973 movie written and directed by Michael Crichton. Crichton was a popular author, known for bestsellers like Jurassic Park and Congo, as well as the TV series ER.
Details about the story of the new movie are still secret. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it probably won’t be related to the original Westworld TV show. The film will likely focus on the adult-themed fantasy park where visitors can experience life as cowboys in the Old West.
Kalen Koepp is a great fit to write the new Westworld series because he’s successfully adapted Michael Crichton’s work before. He previously wrote the screenplays for Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), both directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Crichton’s novels.
All four seasons of Westworld are available on digital platforms like the Apple TV Store.
