While Game of Thrones currently has the most seasons of any HBO fantasy series, another show might surpass it. Thrones lasted for eight seasons, though its ending was divisive. Other HBO fantasy series haven’t reached the same length; Carnivàle was canceled after just two seasons, His Dark Materials ran for three, and House of the Dragon is projected to conclude after four seasons in 2028 (with Season 3 coming out this summer).
I’m already hooked on the new Game of Thrones show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – it might just be the best fantasy show out there right now! It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, and it follows the adventures of a wandering knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his young squire, Egg, as they travel around Westeros. What’s really exciting is that the showrunner, Ira Parker, has talked about potentially making this show last for 12 to 15 seasons! Even though there are only three books out currently, Martin has enough material planned for around a dozen more, and Parker wants to adapt all of it for TV. It’s a huge goal, but I’m definitely on board if they can pull it off!
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Needs 12-15 Seasons To Have A Complete Story

Honestly, the Dunk and Egg story feels unfinished right now. We know generally what happens to them because of the wider world of Game of Thrones, but there are so many gaps. The books we have only cover about three years of their adventures, and there’s potentially another fifty years worth of story to tell! The idea is that the show could start with a few seasons focusing on young Egg, then jump forward ten years for another four or five seasons, and repeat that for the final part of their journey. It would be amazing to see the whole story fully realized.
Bringing the Dunk and Egg stories to life as a full series would be challenging – it’d require the continued availability of the actors Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell, keeping viewers engaged over a long period, and a significant commitment from HBO. However, if it happened, we’d finally see the complete adventures of Dunk and Egg, covering both the well-known events and plenty of new ones. Most importantly, it would allow the series to conclude properly, with a satisfying and definitive ending.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Having 10+ Seasons Would Show HBO Has Learned From GOT

The decision to end Game of Thrones after eight seasons didn’t come from HBO. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had originally planned for a seven-season show. HBO was happy to continue longer, and George R.R. Martin believes the story needed at least ten seasons to be fully developed. Considering many viewers felt Season 8 was rushed, it’s easy to see why Martin feels that way.
As a huge fantasy fan, I really hope HBO recognizes how special this prequel could be. If the people making the show are serious about wanting to tell a really long story – like 10, 12, or even 15 seasons – I think HBO should support that vision. It doesn’t cost nearly as much to make as Thrones or House of the Dragon, and people are definitely watching! Giving it the room to breathe would allow for a truly complete adaptation, avoiding the rushed feeling or compromises we’ve seen with other fantasy series.
This would also be a big win for HBO. Although they’re developing several Game of Thrones spin-offs, only two have actually aired, and House of the Dragon will finish its run in a couple of years. Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms isn’t due until 2027, so having a show that viewers can consistently enjoy and invest in over the long term – particularly if it stays well-made – would be a valuable asset for HBO and its streaming service, Max.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 is available to stream on HBO Max.
