A new update about the upcoming Harry Potter TV series on HBO is generating buzz. With the original movies still fresh in many people’s minds – and having been incredibly successful – the show needs to offer something different. Early glimpses have been a bit of both worlds: some designs feel familiar, while other changes are bringing back elements that were left out of the films, like the characters Peeves and Professor Binns.
Recent news about the upcoming Harry Potter TV series highlights a scene that was left out of the films: the very beginning of *The Philosopher’s Stone*. A Reddit user, u/MistyMaz, shared photos and videos showing the new actor playing Vernon Dursley (Daniel Rigby) accidentally colliding with a wizard wearing a purple cloak. Their interaction leaves Vernon visibly uneasy. The footage also depicts wizards openly celebrating Voldemort’s defeat among non-magical people – details taken directly from the book.
Mr. Dursley mumbled an apology as a small, elderly man nearly tripped and fell. He then noticed the man was wearing a bright purple cloak. Surprisingly, the man didn’t seem bothered at all by almost falling. Instead, he beamed and said in a high-pitched voice that turned heads: “Don’t apologize! I couldn’t be happier today! Be joyful, because You-Know-Who is finally gone! Even people like you, who aren’t familiar with magic, should be celebrating this wonderful day!”
Why The Harry Potter Remake Including This Scene Is Important

The Harry Potter films didn’t show Vernon Dursley’s day-to-day life, immediately starting with baby Harry being left at 4 Privet Drive and then quickly moving to scenes of him as an older child. While this made the movies more concise and kept the focus on the main characters, those earlier events are actually important for understanding the story’s world and its characters.
This scene immediately establishes Vernon Dursley’s character – he’s incredibly ordinary and intolerant of anything unusual, even for a non-magical person. This explains a lot about his harsh treatment of Harry, making the scene important for that reason alone. However, the contrast between Vernon and the wizards is crucial too. It’s the only time we directly see how relieved and happy the wizarding world was when Voldemort fell, and therefore, how significant Harry is to them.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I always loved how this scene beautifully contrasted the magical and non-magical worlds. It’s a small moment, sure, but it’s *so* effective at setting the stage for everything that happens when Harry arrives. With the new series not being limited by movie runtime, there was absolutely no reason to leave this out, and I’m thrilled they finally included it. It’s a perfect way to kick things off and really immerse you in the story.
The Harry Potter TV show is currently filming ahead of an expected 2027 release on HBO and HBO Max.
