HBO’s Harry Potter Set Increases Security After Criminal Threat Revealed

Hogwarts is experiencing a crime wave as filming on the show continues.

HBO is creating a new TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s popular Harry Potter books, with Francesca Gardiner as the show’s creator. Filming began last July and is still underway at Leavesden Studios in the UK. While a first trailer suggested the series might premiere this Christmas, production has faced some challenges.

I was shocked to read in the Daily Mail that they’ve been having thefts on the set of Harry Potter! Apparently, things have been going missing – pumpkins, spell books, even wands and fake blood! It happened while they were filming the big Halloween feast scene in the Great Hall, which is just unbelievable. You’d think security would be super tight, but it seems like someone’s been helping themselves to souvenirs!

To prevent theft, Warner Bros. UK has started microchipping props like wands and broomsticks. They’ve also put up warning posters around the studio. One poster is designed to look like an official notice from the Harry Potter films, using a similar font and style, and even shows a picture of a broomstick with a tracking tag. The poster reads:

All props on set have been tagged with microchips to help us keep track of them for security and inventory. We monitor their location daily and record any movement. If you need to take a prop off set or move it from where it’s stored, please get permission from the Props Department beforehand. If you notice anything missing, lost, or out of place, please let the Props team know so we can investigate.

Despite the poster’s playful approach to discouraging theft, studio executives are treating the issue as a serious problem. According to reports, they’ve warned everyone working on set that anyone caught stealing will be immediately removed for violating their contract.

A source at the Daily Mail revealed details about how the production is responding to the recent thefts, emphasizing that they aren’t just focusing on the background actors. “While it’s natural to suspect the many supporting actors on set, the truth is no one knows who is responsible,” the source said. Security isn’t limited to the set itself, either. According to the source, “Production leaders have stated they will be actively monitoring eBay to prevent stolen items from being sold online.” Anyone caught selling stolen property will face punishment and termination.

The Harry Potter TV series has faced another setback following the recent theft of props and set pieces. Previously this year, aerial views of key sets – including Hagrid’s hut, Privet Drive, Diagon Alley, and Gringotts Wizarding Bank – unexpectedly appeared on Apple Maps. This leak reportedly upset show producers, who had worked hard to keep the sets under wraps.

Even though some HBO executives were reportedly unhappy, excitement for the new season is still strong, and it’s expected to be a big hit. Production on Harry Potter season 2 has officially been confirmed and will likely begin filming later this year.

The new TV show will cover each of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books one season at a time. The first season, with eight episodes, will be based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and the second season will adapt The Chamber of Secrets. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Alastair Stout will play Ron, and Arabella Stanton will play Hermione.

The fact that props were stolen suggests everyone involved with the show – cast and crew alike – is incredibly enthusiastic and wants a memento of what’s likely to become a historic production. While it’s still uncertain if the new Harry Potter series will meet expectations, HBO is clearly investing a lot in bringing the Wizarding World to life.
