With the new Harry Potter series coming this Christmas, HBO Max has released a special showing a behind-the-scenes look at its creation. The short special is designed to get fans excited, and it succeeds, offering some fascinating details about the upcoming show. Called Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, it’s now available to stream on HBO Max. Even from the brief glimpses shown, it’s clear the creators have put incredible detail into this new adaptation of JK Rowling’s books, including fresh designs for iconic elements like Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, chocolate frogs, and butterbeer.
A fascinating part of the documentary showcases the amazing animatronic creatures used in the show, with detailed views of an owl, a tortoise, and Ron’s rat, Scabbers. These incredibly lifelike models highlight the show’s attention to detail. But the reveal of Scabbers biting someone is more than just a cool effect – it hints that a scene cut from the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone, will be included in the remake.
Harry Potter’s Biting Scabbers Reveals a Missing Scene is Back

As a huge fan, I was really impressed by how they brought Scabbers to life in the documentary! They showed this incredibly realistic model of him scurrying around on the floor, and then they revealed another one – a little version they used for the scene where someone’s ‘biting’ him – hanging from a crew member’s finger. It looked so good! It also hinted that we’re finally going to see one of the rare times Scabbers actually does something brave on screen, which I’m super excited about.
Chapter 6 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone introduces Draco Malfoy’s intimidating companions, Crabbe and Goyle, when Goyle tries to snatch sweets from Harry and Ron. Although this scene was cut from the first movie, likely due to time constraints, it’s a memorable moment from the book that will apparently be included in future adaptations. The book vividly describes the incident: Goyle attempts to steal the sweets, but Scabbers the rat bites his knuckle, causing him to howl and swing Scabbers around. The three boys then quickly flee after Scabbers flies into a window.
Honestly, when I first read that Scabbers bit Draco Malfoy, it felt a little strange, especially knowing Draco’s dad was a Death Eater. But it actually made me understand Ron’s connection to that rat so much better. It finally explained why Ron cared for Scabbers, even though he seemed like such a useless pet. It gave their whole relationship a lot more depth, you know?
The documentary showed how incredibly realistic the rat bite scene is, thanks to advanced animatronic technology. John Nolan, the Creature Effects Design Supervisor, explained how they made the creature feel lifelike: “When you move its legs, it compresses, making it feel natural and not stiff. This is crucial for the young actor who’s never worked with an animatronic before.” This dedication to detail extended to all the creatures. For example, the ten owls each had around 36,000 feathers, as noted by CFX artist Sophie Rechtberger – a result of extensive research and observation of real animals and birds.
