He explained that he hasn’t officially committed to the project yet, and hasn’t received any updates recently. Despite this, he remains optimistic and is excited about the possibility of collaborating with Issa López, the creator of Night Country.
Nicolas Cage Isn’t Officially Signed On
When asked about a potential Season 5 of True Detective, Nicolas Cage said he wasn’t aware of any current plans. He mentioned the writers are likely developing ideas, but he hasn’t been updated recently and isn’t currently committed to the project. He expressed admiration for writer Issa López and said he’d enjoy collaborating with her if the opportunity arose, but nothing is confirmed. Surprisingly, Cage also admitted he hasn’t actually watched the first season of True Detective, though he’s heard positive reviews.
Issa López joined the True Detective team as the creator of its fourth season, Night Country. This was the first season made without the original showrunner, Nic Pizzolatto, who had publicly voiced his disapproval of it. Despite this, Night Country proved to be the most popular season of the series, attracting the largest audience and earning a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the highest of any season.
The Anthology Series Is Expected to Continue
I’m a huge fan of True Detective! What’s so cool about it is that each season features a completely new cast and a brand new mystery. The first season was amazing with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and then Season 2 brought in Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams. Later seasons starred Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo, but after that, the creator, Nic Pizzolatto, moved on from the show.
In Night Country, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis played officers investigating the mysterious disappearance of eight men from an Alaskan research station. Foster won an Emmy Award for her leading role, and Reis received a nomination for supporting actress. The show’s success – including positive reviews and high viewership – led to the announcement of a fifth season. Reports surfaced in early 2025 that Season 5 was being developed, with a possible debut on HBO in 2027.
