“He’d Kick the S**t out of Jaime Lannister”: How Game of Thrones’ New Knight Compares to Westeros’ Best Fighters Explained by Star

Be warned: This article reveals plot details from George R.R. Martin’s The Tales of Dunk & Egg. The HBO Max series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on January 18th, and Peter Claffey, who plays the character Dunk, believes his character would be a strong contender against any of the Seven Kingdoms’ most skilled knights.

The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is getting excellent reviews – currently at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. It follows Ser Duncan, a wandering knight, and his squire, Egg, who has a hidden past, as they encounter various perils. Set during the Targaryen dynasty’s reign – when dragons are still a part of living memory – the show explores how Dunk would stack up against legendary warriors from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, like Daemon Targaryen, Ser Barriston Selmy, and Jaime Lannister. According to Peter Claffey, the actor playing Dunk, he wouldn’t compare himself to them at all.

So, How Well Would Dunk Hold Up Against The Greats?

According to Claffey, Dunk wouldn’t have imagined himself becoming the leader of the Kingsguard – essentially the king’s chief bodyguard. He simply wanted to earn an honest living like Ser Arlan, guided by a strong moral code. He didn’t see himself achieving great renown. Claffey believes Dunk’s inherent goodness and his relationship with Egg are what lead to his successes, ultimately making him one of the greatest knights. He estimates Dunk would rank among the top ten, though he lost to a young Barristan Selmy in a tournament. When considering how he’d fare against other knights, Claffey confidently states Dunk would defeat Jaime Lannister. While this is a bold claim considering Jaime’s reputation as an exceptional swordsman from a young age, it’s good to have ambitious goals.

Dunk wasn’t famous for his swordsmanship, but for being a truly honorable man—loyal, kind, and unwavering. These qualities were incredibly uncommon in Westeros at the time, and in that respect, Duncan the Tall stood above everyone else.
