Warning: spoilers for Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials.
Helena Bonham Carter plays Lady Caterham in Netflix’s new mystery series, Seven Dials, which is based on Agatha Christie’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery. Interestingly, the story includes a surprising twist involving her character that fans of another Netflix detective show featuring Bonham Carter might find familiar.
Seven Dials centers around Lady Bundle, played by Mia McKenna-Bruce, as she tries to uncover what happened to her close friend, Gerry Wade (Corey Mylchreest), who died after a party at her house. Her main lead is a letter mentioning “Seven Dials,” and the search for answers will reveal unexpected secrets.
As Bundle investigates the death of Gerry Wade alongside Superintendent Battle (Martin Freeman), she makes a surprising discovery, revealing a complex truth with unexpected connections to those she trusts, even her own mother.
Helena Bonham Carter’s Lady Caterham Repeats Her Eudoria Holmes Twist
Helena Bonham Carter plays Lady Caterham, Bundle’s mother, who also attends the party where Gerry Wade is discovered dead. While she doesn’t seem interested in Bundle’s investigation into Wade’s death, a surprising development towards the end of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials unexpectedly puts her at the heart of the mystery.
It turns out Lady Caterham was the one who orchestrated the theft of Dr. Matip’s formula. She hired Jimmy Thesiger and Loraine, Gerry Wade’s sister, to carry it out. Lady Caterham intended to sell the formula to foreign buyers, effectively committing an act of treason. Gerry Wade discovered her plan, and Loraine killed him to keep it secret.
Lady Caterham told Bundle that she felt abandoned by her country, having lost both her husband and son – her son died in the war. Although she pleaded with Bundle to allow her to leave before the police came, Bundle wouldn’t let her, and she was ultimately arrested. This situation bears a resemblance to a plot twist in the movie Enola Holmes.
Helena Bonham Carter plays Eudoria Holmes, the mother of Sherlock, Mycroft, and Enola. When Eudoria unexpectedly vanishes, it sets Enola on the path to becoming a detective. It’s later discovered that Eudoria didn’t just leave – she intentionally left her daughter and is involved with a progressive group fighting for women’s rights, and she doesn’t intend to come back.
Although Eudoria’s schemes weren’t as harmful as Lady Caterham’s, both characters – played by Helena Bonham Carter – shifted from being the mothers of young detectives to actually causing the mysteries their daughters were trying to solve.
Could Lady Caterham Return After Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials?
Although Eudoria continues to make occasional appearances in the Enola Holmes films, what happened to Lady Caterham after the events of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is unknown. The novel ends with Lady Caterham, Jimmy, and Loraine all being arrested, while Bundle is invited to join the Seven Dials organization by its leader, Battle.
If the show Seven Dials continues, Lady Caterham could return as a recurring villain, which would create more challenges for Bundle now that she’s joined the group. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, but currently, Helena Bonham Carter’s Lady Caterham and Eudoria Holmes share some intriguing parallels.
