Just over a week ago, the developers of Hellblade, Ninja Theory, revealed Senua for the PlayStation 5, but the studio is now facing potential closure.
According to reports, Microsoft informed the Cambridge-based development studio – known for its previous work on the PlayStation 3 game Heavenly Sword with Sony – that it would be closing its doors today.
But The Verge (paywalled) says it’s hoping to find a buyer, as it tries to regain its independence.
This news aligns with a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier indicating that multiple Xbox game development studios could be closed down. Specifically, both Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions are reportedly at risk of being affected.
Ninja Theory recently announced Senua, an action game continuing the story of Hellblade, initially scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2027. However, the game’s development is now facing uncertainty.
This is happening as Xbox undergoes a larger restructuring that may include significant job cuts.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, recently stated the company needs to ensure Xbox is financially stable. According to Asha Sharma, the new head of Xbox, the division currently operates with only a 3% profit margin.
