Since launching in February 2024, Helldivers 2, the popular co-op shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, has kept players busy with a steady stream of new content. The developers regularly add ‘Warbonds’ offering unlockable gear, introduce new enemy types to keep battles interesting, and create large-scale events like the defense of Super Earth.
Despite all the changes over time, the basic gameplay loop has remained consistent: players enter a map, navigate it, complete goals while battling enemies, and then escape.
Helldivers 2 isn’t flawed – in fact, its fast-paced action, wide variety of weapons and support options, and challenging alien enemies combine to make it a remarkably replayable cooperative shooter.
It would be fascinating to see how Helldivers 2 could be changed with a completely different gameplay experience. According to Johan Pilestedt, the creative director at Arrowhead, the studio is currently testing a prototype for a roguelike or roguelite mode that aims to do just that.
I’m excited to share that we’ve developed a prototype for a roguelite mode! A fan suggested a persistent, single-map experience with repeating or evolving objectives, and we’ve been exploring that idea. It really transforms how the game plays!

As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear Arrowhead is working on a roguelite mode! It sounds amazing, but they’re still early in development, so I’m trying to be patient. It could be a long time before we even get a glimpse of it, and there’s always a chance it might not make it into Helldivers 2 at all, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
It’s great to see the developers experimenting with new and creative ideas for their popular co-op shooter. Considering how much freedom the game already offers, it really gets me thinking about what’s possible.
As a fan, it’s awesome to see Arrowhead really trying out a bunch of cool ideas for the game! They’re looking at things like random upgrades, or letting you pick from different upgrade sets, and even adding multiple objectives that make you think strategically about where to go next – it reminds me a bit of Elden Ring’s Nightreign. Plus, they’re playing around with a classic, endless-wave survival mode like Halo’s Firefight, where you can restock and re-gear between waves. It all sounds really promising!
There’s huge potential for this new mode, and it’s great to hear from Pilestedt that it could drastically change how Helldivers 2 is played. This suggests it’s more than just a small update – it could be a completely new experience if released.
Helldivers 2 normally costs $39.99 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. It became incredibly popular when it launched on Xbox in August with the ‘Into the Unjust’ update, actually causing server crashes due to the huge number of players. Right now, though, you can find it on sale for a significantly reduced price on all three platforms.
Okay, so I’ve been checking for deals, and here’s what I found! You can snag the PC version for just $29.49 at Loaded, and the PS5 version is only $29.99 at Best Buy. It’s a bummer there aren’t any discounts on the regular Xbox version, but if you’re into the Super Citizen Edition on Xbox, Loaded has it for $50.89 – that includes some cool extra stuff, too!
