As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I’ve been seeing some amazing fan art lately! Apparently, with the news that Viggo Mortensen won’t be back for ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ people are photoshopping Henry Cavill into the role of Aragorn, and honestly, it looks pretty great. This new movie is the first live-action sequel since Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, so everyone’s super excited. And the buzz got even bigger when they announced Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are returning, along with Andy Serkis, of course!
Andy Serkis, known for playing Gollum, is directing a new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The movie will be based on a story from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring where Gandalf explains to Frodo how they sought out Gollum to verify that Bilbo’s ring was actually the One Ring belonging to Sauron.
Aragorn plays a key role in this story, as Gandalf requested he guide Gollum through Mirkwood. However, it appears Viggo Mortensen won’t be involved in A Hunt for Gollum (according to Knight Edge Media), and Andy Serkis is supposedly looking at other actors to take over the part. An artist online (via Instagram) has created fan art showing Henry Cavill as Aragorn, and he does resemble the character, but this isn’t the direction most fans would prefer.
Why Viggo Mortensen Is Not Returning As Aragorn
While neither Andy Serkis nor Viggo Mortensen has officially confirmed it, the rumor that Viggo Mortensen won’t be back as Aragorn in Hunt for Gollum seems likely. Mortensen has consistently said he’d only reprise the role if the story felt right.
The new film, Hunt for Gollum, takes place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, meaning Aragorn should appear as he did in the 2001 movie. However, the actors have aged significantly over the past 25 years, so the production will likely use digital technology to make them look younger. While McKellen and Wood are reportedly on board with this, Mortensen has expressed some hesitation about using CGI for de-aging.
Philippa Boyens, a writer on the Lord of the Rings films, said that Viggo Mortensen was asked to reprise his role, but he would only agree if he liked the script. Given that Mortensen was already unsure, it’s clear his willingness to have his appearance digitally altered to look younger hinged on whether the project genuinely interested him. It seems it ultimately didn’t.
Would Henry Cavill Make A Good Aragorn?
If Henry Cavill embodies the look fans have imagined for the character, he’d be a great fit for the role. He’s already proven popular with devoted fans by successfully portraying iconic characters in franchises like Superman, The Witcher, Warhammer, and Highlander. Taking on a role in the upcoming Lord of the Rings project feels like a logical move for him, although imagining him as Aragorn takes some getting used to.
It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, and the online reaction to fan art of Henry Cavill shows that. People generally don’t like it when actors are replaced, and reviving the Lord of the Rings franchise without the original cast, even with a popular star like Cavill, feels off. While any new actor will have their own take on the role, Mortensen will always be remembered as the definitive ruler of Gondor.
