Here’s How Mephisto Can Fit Into Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Along with Sadie Sink)

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but feel thrilled now that the notorious Mephisto, portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen, has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Known as Marvel’s cosmic embodiment of evil, first introduced in 1968 as a formidable adversary to the Silver Surfer, we’re all on tenterhooks to see where this captivating character will make his next appearance beyond Ironheart.

While it might be premature to speculate about Mephisto’s involvement in Fantastic Four: First Steps, it certainly seems plausible that he could play a significant role in upcoming titles like Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars, given his connection to Victor von Doom’s mother’s blood.

Though we have a bit of a wait ahead—with Doomsday and Secret Wars scheduled for late 2026 and 2027, respectively—it’s not far-fetched to imagine Mephisto making an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. After all, he has a knack for causing trouble, particularly when it comes to Peter Parker, whom he torments for a very specific reason.

In the “One More Day” storyline published in 2007, Peter Parker strikes a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May’s life. Instead of taking his soul, Mephisto feeds off Peter’s deep sadness from the dissolution of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson. Eventually, Peter and MJ agree to erase their marriage and all memories of it in this bargain with Mephisto. Before the erasure occurs, Mephisto shows them a daughter they will never have – a girl named Mayday Parker. In Amazing Spider-Man (Vol.5) #74, we learn why Mephisto is so determined to keep Peter and Mary Jane apart. During a chat with Doctor Strange, Mephisto explains that he’s seen both their futures, and it’s Mayday who has the potential to overthrow his demonic reign on Earth. However, if Peter and Mary Jane aren’t married and don’t have a child, there’s no way for Mayday to challenge Mephisto’s power.

Mephisto Could Pick Up Where Doctor Strange’s Spell Left Peter in No Way Home

In the “One More Day” race, Mary Jane asks Mephisto to once more keep Spider-Man’s identity hidden, an agreement he accepts. This scenario may seem familiar; recall the poignant, emotionally charged moment in “No Way Home”, where after Doctor Strange casts a spell to save the multiverse, Peter (Tom Holland) visits MJ’s workplace, only to discover that she and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) have no recollection of him. In “MCU”, Peter seems to accept the aftermath of the spell gracefully, seeking a fresh start. However, maintaining a clean break proves more difficult than expected. Given Mephisto’s persuasive abilities demonstrated in his previous deals with Parker Robbins and Riri Williams (“Ironheart”), could he resurface in “Brand New Day” to present Peter with an offer he can’t refuse? This offer may involve restoring Aunt May or refreshing the memories of his friends. Of course, there will be a price – something that Mephisto needs to secure his control over the Marvel multiverse.

The role that Sade Sink may be taking on in Brand New Day is still under wraps, but there’s speculation she might play Spider-Man’s daughter from an alternate reality, Mayday Parker. Given her age and the appearance of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man (“Peter 2”) in No Way Home, it’s plausible that Sink could portray the offspring of Peter 2 and his Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). If this is the case, her character, dubbed Spider-Girl, could pose a significant threat to Mephisto. An intriguing twist is that Mephisto might employ both Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and The Punisher, played by John Bernthal, to eliminate this threat, potentially restoring their damaged lives in return.

For over half a century, Mephisto has been one of Marvel’s major antagonists, so it’s not entirely implausible that he would assign challenging tasks to both Peter (Spider-Man) and Frank (the Punisher). Such tasks would lead these characters into deep, philosophical struggles. For instance, Frank took up the Punisher mantle to avenge his family’s death, but how would he handle killing another person’s child? On the other hand, would Peter choose to betray a different version of himself in order to ensure his own happiness? While these are just speculations, the actors portraying these characters – Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, and Florence Pugh (who recently won her first Tony Award) – have shown they can bring complexity, emotion, and humanity to larger-than-life roles and multiverse dilemmas.

As a supporter, I imagine that while some might think “Brand New Day” will delve into street-level tales without affecting future stories like “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” Peter could still opt to rescue Mayday, rejecting Mephisto’s proposition to restore his old life. This decision would not only offer a significant moral dilemma for Peter but also ensure that his past remains untouched, readying himself, Mephisto, and The Punisher for their potential roles in the approaching “Avengers” films.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
