Hilary Duff is coming clean—and then some.
With her new album, Luck… or Something, Hilary Duff not only returned to making music, but also opened up to fans about her personal life. She shared details about past relationships, her marriage to Matthew Koma, and the challenges she faces with her family, including her sister, Haylie Duff.
Therefore, it’s not surprising that Hilary continued to be very open and honest when she spoke with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
One of the main things she discussed was her relationship with Haylie, and how their current distance inspired her new song, “We Don’t Talk.”
Hilary shared that she sometimes feels hurt when things don’t go as planned, especially when trying to repair damaged relationships. However, she also values her ability to remain optimistic and keep an open mind, always willing to try and move forward with a good heart.
Hilary has generally been private about her relationship with Haylie, but she felt her new album was the perfect time to be open about what it’s really like—and it seems like a lot of people connected with her honesty.
I was chatting with Alex, and we started discussing how people are reacting to the songs on her new album. We talked about tracks like “Roommates,” but especially “Mature” – that one’s really been getting people talking! It’s been so interesting to see everyone’s thoughts.
When Hilary Duff released the song in November, listeners wondered if the lyrics—which hinted at a relationship with a significantly older man—were about Joel Madden or Leonardo DiCaprio. Although Hilary and Leonardo never publicly dated, a line in the song— “Very Leo with your Scorpio touch”—sparked speculation, and Matthew Koma (Hilary’s then-husband) playfully fueled the rumors.
But for Hilary, her music just serves as an outlet.
She explained that her song, “Roommates,” is designed to spark conversation, but isn’t intended to be shocking or attention-grabbing. It’s actually a heartfelt request, something she believes many women can connect with. She jokingly admitted she’s never had that experience in a dive bar, but added that songwriters have creative license and can use imagery and storytelling in their work.

Hilary Duff, who has a 13-year-old son named Luca with her ex-husband Mike Comrie, and daughters Banks (7), Mae (4), and Townes (21 months) with Matthew, was hesitant to discuss certain sensitive parts of her past. However, the actress didn’t shy away from talking about other relationships, including her first romance with the late Aaron Carter.
She said she met him at his birthday party, and they immediately had a connection. She remembers thinking he was cute, and she soon suggested he appear on her show. They started dating shortly after that.

When Ashley Tisdale wrote about difficult experiences with a mothers’ group, many people wondered if Hilary Duff was involved. Shortly after, Hilary’s husband, Matthew Koma, publicly defended her, adding to the speculation.
Now, Hilary is ready to come clean about her perspective.
During the February 25th episode of Call Her Daddy, she shared that she felt genuinely sad about something. She was surprised and disappointed to read something untrue, not just for herself, but also for about six other women and the impact it had on their lives. She explained that she’s very close to both her longtime friends – some she’s known for 10 to 20 years – and the many mom friends she’s made through having four children, and it was upsetting to see something false being spread.

Hilary Duff, known from Lizzie McGuire, revealed she deliberately showed up at Lindsay Lohan’s Freaky Friday premiere in 2003 to upset her longtime rival. The conflict stemmed from both of them dating Aaron Carter. Thankfully, the two have since resolved their differences and are on good terms.
She said that after all this time, it just doesn’t seem important anymore. She recalled an encounter with Lindsay Lohan at a club where Lindsay asked if they were okay, and she responded that they were. Lindsay then suggested they have a shot together, which she agreed to.

Hilary recently discussed her relationship with her sister Haylie, especially after releasing her song “We Don’t Talk.” She explained that before expressing herself through music, she always tried to be direct and honest in her relationships.
Hilary said that after a decade away from making music, it felt necessary to reflect on what had happened in her life. She explained that a lot of significant, and often difficult, experiences shaped who she is, and that’s just part of life.
She explained that because she was on Lizzie McGuire, a lot of people feel like they’ve known her family – her mom, sister, and dad – for a long time. She finds it strange that people are so interested in her small family, and it makes her feel sad and a little scared to share personal things online. But she feels it’s important to be honest about how she’s feeling.

As a lifestyle expert, I often get asked about celebrity connections, and a lot of fans remember Aaron Carter on Lizzie McGuire with Hilary Duff. But I recently learned the real story of how they actually first met – it wasn’t quite how everyone thinks! It’s always interesting to hear the true origins of these Hollywood friendships, especially considering Aaron’s passing in 2022.
She shared that she met him at his birthday party, and they immediately had a connection. She thought of having him as a guest on her show, and they quickly started dating after that.

Hilary Duff and her then-husband, Mike Comrie, welcomed their son, Luca, in 2012. They separated almost two years later, a decision Hilary described as a natural progression.
Eventually, things reached a point where we were just done. I think he was relieved when I clearly stated what needed to happen, and he agreed. This was all before the idea of ‘conscious uncoupling’ became popular. My parents had a really difficult divorce, so even talking about separating was painful, but ultimately, we realized we couldn’t make it work as a couple.
It was a difficult situation because our child was very young, not even two years old. I really tried to make the transitions as smooth and peaceful as possible, prioritizing spending quality time together. Instead of just quick drop-offs and pick-ups, we’d go to the park or have a meal together. I wanted Luca to feel comfortable and secure throughout the whole process.
