It came as no surprise that the launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong led to Steam experiencing significant delays or even temporary stoppages.
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 indie sensation, Silksong, has been in the works for eight long years, undergoing a comprehensive development process. This prolonged period of development created an almost unimaginable level of anticipation among fans. When Team Cherry finally revealed the game’s official release date, excitement reached a fever pitch.
Instead of allowing pre-orders, the game creators decided to make players buy the game only when it went live today (Thursday, September 4th) at 3 pm BST.
When a massive number of insatiable gamers, perhaps even tens of thousands, converge on the servers of the Steam store, it’s reasonable to expect a high demand and potential overload or congestion.
Immediately at 3 pm, the Steam store experienced a crash due to an overwhelming influx of gamers eager to purchase Silksong. This situation was exacerbated by those who had already secured copies attempting to download the game simultaneously.
Currently, when attempting to open the Steam store, it returns an E502 L3 error message instead.
It seems that the frequent crashes of the Steam store have sparked curiosity among numerous gamers, prompting them to swiftly check out the previously high Steam player count displayed on SteamDB.
Regrettably, the influx of eager gamers visiting SteamDB temporarily caused the tracking site to malfunction too.
It’s uncertain if the buyers of Silksong, who can’t pre-order on Steam and SteamDB crashes, will only affect these platforms. However, it seems that as long as players persistently try to gain access, Steam might have to endure this unexpected and amusing situation, which could have been prevented.
A heartfelt message for those disappointed in their attempt to purchase “Cronos: The New Dawn” – our sympathies are with you during this time.
