In the fifth season of Stranger Things, Holly Wheeler (played by Nell Fisher) is taking on a bigger role. She might even be the one who can save Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) from Vecna. While Holly has been a smaller character throughout most of the series, she’s now actively involved in the main action.
Holly, a young and trusting girl, believes her imaginary friend, Mr. Whatsit, is protecting her. However, Mr. Whatsit isn’t what he appears to be, and he leads her into a dangerous alternate reality. Luckily, Max arrives to save her, revealing they’re both stuck inside the terrifying memories of Vecna.
Holly and Max team up to escape, and Holly will need to find incredible bravery to do so. It seems she’ll play a key role in defeating Vecna, and clues suggest we’ll soon understand exactly how she’ll manage it.
Holly’s “Cleric” Title Suggests How She & Max Escape From Vecna’s Mindscape
The first episode of Stranger Things season 5, titled “Chapter One: The Crawl,” opens with Mike (Finn Wolfhard) picking up Holly at her elementary school. He discovers she’s reading Madeleine L’Engle’s classic 1962 science fantasy novel, A Wrinkle in Time, while sitting in the hallway. During their interaction, Mike playfully calls Holly “Holly the Heroic.”
He playfully establishes their roles by gifting her a Dungeons & Dragons figurine and declaring her a cleric – a character with the ability to cast protective spells and open doorways to other worlds. The Duffer brothers clearly didn’t choose this class for her by chance, and it seems like big things are in store for this young character.
Max and Holly are trapped inside Vecna’s memories, but Max has a plan to escape – we’ll find out what it is when Stranger Things returns on Christmas Day. The plan seems to center around Holly, and if she has the power to open pathways, she might be the key to getting them both out of Vecna’s mind.
Stranger Things Season 5 Already Hinted At When Holly & Max’s Escape Will Happen

Now that Holly’s a cleric, Max is leading the group, and the latest episode ended with a plan, it seems our new friends will be trying to break free from Vecna’s influence. Meanwhile, Eleven and the others are heading towards him, and a future episode title suggests we’ll see exactly when that escape happens.
Episode 6, titled “Escape from Camazotz,” will be released with episodes 5 and 7 on December 25th. “Camazotz” is the name of a bleak prison planet featured in the book Holly was reading, A Wrinkle in Time. She described the similarities between Vecna’s mental prison and Camazotz to Max in episode 4, “Sorcerer.”
Fans of A Wrinkle in Time remember how the strong bond between siblings helped the characters escape danger, and it’s likely that Holly and Max will need a similar level of love and friendship to overcome Vecna in the fifth season of Stranger Things.
