Guerrilla Games recently added a new feature to Horizon Forbidden West on PS5, four years after the game’s initial launch. This is the first update to the open-world RPG this year. While older games don’t usually receive many updates, Guerrilla Games took advantage of a new feature added to the PS5 console itself to enhance the gaming experience for Horizon Forbidden West players.
Last year, Sony added a low-power mode to the PS5. When enabled for supported games, this mode prioritizes energy savings by slightly reducing game performance. While it might seem minor, the energy reduction can be significant – sometimes cutting power consumption by as much as 50%. It’s a bit surprising it took so long, but Guerrilla Games has now included this feature for players who want to help lower their energy use.
Horizon Forbidden West on Handheld?
For a while now, people have speculated that this feature is being developed so Sony can eventually make PS5 games playable on a handheld device, or even allow future PS6 games to run on a handheld console.
Okay, so this new feature basically tries to make the game run smoother by tweaking how hard my CPU and GPU work. It does this by subtly lowering the graphics quality, and sometimes I might notice a slight dip in frame rate. The cool thing is, it’s supposed to happen without me even realizing it’s changing things, but I might spot a downgrade in visuals. Honestly, it’s totally optional – only for players who want that extra performance boost. It wasn’t something people were really asking for, though. It’s part of a bigger plan Sony’s doing, something they’re calling ‘Road to Zero,’ so it’s more about them proactively improving things.
Horizon Forbidden West is a visually stunning game, particularly for an open-world title on PS5. While it might seem counterintuitive to intentionally reduce its graphical fidelity, even on its lower performance setting, it still maintains a beautiful appearance – something not all games can achieve.
It’s unclear what the future holds for Horizon Forbidden West. While major updates seem unlikely, rumors have circulated for a couple of years suggesting Guerrilla Games is already developing a sequel.
