Sony successfully removed the mobile game Light of Motiram, which resembled Horizon, from the internet. They reached a private agreement with its creator, Tencent, and have now closed the legal case.
Okay, so it’s official – the case is dropped. I just saw the court papers. Apparently, both companies worked something out behind the scenes and decided to just call it quits. They aren’t saying what the deal was, but whatever it was, it stopped the whole thing from going any further.
The game Light of Motiram, which PlayStation’s legal team claimed was a blatant copy of another game, has been removed from Steam and the Epic Games Store. However, its website is still currently accessible.
Although the exact terms of the agreement haven’t been made public, Sony mainly filed the lawsuit to stop Tencent’s game from being released, and it appears they were successful.
The result is unexpected, considering the intense disagreement between the two companies. PlayStation claimed that Light of Motiram would damage its brand reputation, but Tencent countered that PlayStation was trying to unfairly control the standards of the game genre.
The trial was originally set for January, but with these recent changes, it seems likely Tencent’s legal team didn’t think they would win.
It’s become increasingly obvious that Sony is strongly competing with Light of Motiram, especially after NCSoft, a Korean company, revealed its PC and mobile massively multiplayer online game, Horizon Steel Frontiers, in recent weeks.
Tencent repeatedly suggested to PlayStation that they create a mobile game based on the Horizon series. Sony says these ideas eventually evolved into the game Light of Motiram, but only after PlayStation rejected Tencent’s initial proposals.
This situation has ended abruptly, and it seems PlayStation’s lawyers are pleased with the outcome. They appeared to be primarily focused on stopping the project altogether.
Now that various online stores have removed the content, it seems Sony and its legal team have achieved their goal.
